One year my daughters horse liked to spend most of her time under the pine tree and had lots of pine tar on her. My daughter asked me if I knew how to get rid of the stuff. I told her many years ago when I lived near the beaches in southern california and we would get beach tar on our feet we would clean them up with mayonnaise. So she bought a jar of cheap mayonnaise and smeared all over the horse. It disolved the pine tar just fine but the barn had no hot water so when she gave Star a bath there is only so much cold water could do. Star ended up with a nice shiney coat but smelled like a cheap deli sandwich all season. Did I mention that my daughter does not like mayonnaise! Good luck getting your horse cleaned up! Kathy
Thank you to everyone who replied. We tried the olive oil and it did work just great!!! We didn't get it all off in the bath though so he was a little greasy when we delivered him to his winter digs but it will wear off with a few good rolls in the dirt. Leaves the hands nice and soft too!! Now we will need to tackle the rest of the ponies in the field who are not only covered in pitch but the finest crop of burdocks we have had in years, shoudl be a good time....

Oh Burdocks are so horrible!! Good luck!! Using a comb works better than trying to finger pull them out. And maybe some more of the olive oil or baby oil (Its a bit cheaper)
