UPDATE ON Cisco: Well guys I got him back Saturday. I called her about three times to set up a time and finally she had a "friend" call me because she "wasn't feeling well." He said not to call he cell, because she "lost" it. (OOOkaaay?) Anyway he sadi come at 10am Saturday. I got there at 9:45 and do you know she didn't even have the guts to be there?! NOBODY was there. We pulled in and there was my Cisco, standing on the drive. We got turned around, and opened the trailer door, and he got in all by himself!! It was like he was so glad to see me, and to be going away. I looked around and found his blanket. My husband looked around and noticed that there was no hay, hardly any grass in the pasture or yard to speak of, and no evidence of any feed or even empty feed bags in the barn or anywhere around. We just left with the horse. He wasn't as bad as I feared; a little skinny, but that's all. The awful thing is, something happened to his knee. He is completely lame. I think her mare must have chased the heck out of him. I did find traces of rain rot on him; you know the stubborn scabs that come with rain rot..... I would post a photo but I didn't get them on photobucket yet. I've been making a soaking boot for his knee, using linament on it, and giving him some bute. He is so happy now. Do you know, I put a "free companion horse" ad on craigslist and someone responded to me and said "why don't you just put it to sleep? why keep it around?" I shot them back a email with a piece of my mind. He is FINE and as long as I am living, I will do what it takes to care for him and all my other horses too. Unless I find them good, permanent homes with people who will love them just as much. Ok. I'm done. I'll see if I can't do a photo later.
A couple of years ago, I got a call from an old friend whose daughter had been a horseback riding student of mine. Their son had died suddenly, their marriage had fell apart, the daughter was away at college, and they could no longer deal with their horses, could I take them. I did. The older gelding and a very old mare were thin and poorly. I started fattening them up and trying to figure out what I was going to do. (I talked a little bit about this in the Bad economy/poor horses thread.) This past Christmas, I found a home for the gelding, who was doing great. He had fattened up, had regular hoof trims, was up to date on all his vaccinations, coggin's test, teeth, etc. My vet said he was older, but in great health. My 4-Her's rode him a few times, and loved him. But I was over crowded, and he was not dealing well with the fast pace of my lesson program and young horses in training, and I felt like he needed a slower pace and a home with more personal attention for him. So That is when I found him a home with a nice lady with a draft cross mare, and a young kid to play with. Off he went, on Christmas Eve. I felt good about it.
Till yesterday. In the morning, I suddenly thought about him; wondered how he was doing. I had called her to try to check on him a few months ago but she never returned my call. So I was thinking yesterday morning as I did my horse chores: I need to try to call her again.
Less than an hour later, she called me and left a message. Later in the afternoon I was finally able to contact her and this is what I found out:
"Cisco isn't happy here," she said. "What is going on," I asked.
OM Friggin' G, what she told me....... he got LICE in the winter. He lost a lot of weight. He lost all his hair. Her mare hates him. Her kid won't go near him, let a,one ride him. Her X-husband thinks he's dangerous and is bringing it up in their custody battle. She spent $800 in vet bills. Her vet said he must have had a broken leg at sometime in his life. ("Did he x-ray him?" I saked. Well, no.... "Well, how can he SAY that?!) Yadda, Yadda, Yadda. He has GOT to go, she WON'T put up with it anymore. "I will come this weekend and get him from you," I said. Oh thanks you, blah blah blah.
I am so MAD!!! He was in perfect health when he went away. and how in the HECK did he get LICE?! LICE!!!! ARGGGGG!! Sounds to me like she put on his blanket and never took it off to clean him or check him underneath. I have never had lice on any of my horses, blankets, anything. It is absurd. It was like she was accusing me of giving her a lice infested blanket for him. COME ON!
She just doesn't want to take responsibility for the horse she wanted from me so bad..... she was begging me not to let him go anywhere else but with her; she loved him and stuff. Yeah, whatever.
I know some one who has known the horse all his life, and I KNOW he never had a broken leg, that is CRAZY! What kind of a vet is going to say that without doing an x-ray?! This particular vet has a rotten reputation in the area anyway, though. Mis-diagnosing things and over-dosing drugs and people's pets have died from it.
So I have to go pick up poor Cisco and try to make it up to him. I just hope he is not too far gone. I plan on turning him out at my parent's farm in their big field with their draft mare and pony. So she was complaining about her vet bills? And she has 2 horses? Well, I have ELEVEN horses; and my husband lost his job.... has she though about MY VET BILLS??? But I have to go get him. I can't leave him there. I will find a way. At least she called me; and is dumping him on me, instead of letting him suffer, or dumping him somewhere else where he might end up like so many other horses these days.
Any of you Virginia or NC farm girls want a nice, older QH gelding companion horse for light riding? Just asking.

Hosanna, I am so sorry to hear about your horse! Why didn't this dumb woman try to find a new place for him or at least call you when she started having trouble at least to see if you had any ideas of what she could do! I will be praying that you are able to get Cisco back up to good health! I will also say a prayer that your husband finds work!

What is wrong with people?? Good grief, don't they know horses are a huge responsibility and lots of money to keep? They should have to take a class on horse ownership before they get a horse anymore. That would eliminate a lot of problems in this area.
I am so glad you are able to go get him and you have a good place to put him.

Oh Hosanna, I am so sorry! Uggh, we have this sort of problem at the Humane Society where I work--and though taking care of dogs and cats are NOTHING like horses, I am still sooo amazed that some people are allowed to have pets!
I know it's hard to look at but consider this a blessing that at least the poor horse hasn't had to suffer any more....and at least that woman had enough sense to call--I can't imagine what would happen if she let it go on and on...in a sense, Cisco is coming to where he belongs....and I am sure karma will catch up with this lady sooner or later. The universe is very interesting like that. Ohh, and if I lived closer, I WOULD take the horse :) My sister lives in Chatham, near you by the way! I am sure there are plenty of good horse people that would love Cisco!

Unfortunately, I see this quite often, especially ones that are "given away". People don't have the money to buy a horse, they probably don't have the money for keeping them either. I have seen people just put them out in a pasture because there is some grass they can eat, they don't consider hoof trimming and worming and vacs.
So sad

Some people get wrapped up in the exictement and emotion of owning an animal without really looking at things realistically. That, and the fact that this woman's life is in turmoil, resulted in Cisco suffering. He will be better off back home with you.

Hosanna you sound like an awesome horse person! I'd love to take him but I'm too far away and we just got our herd down to 4...much easier to feed than 7! Mine have never had a lice problem...doesn't sound like he was very well taken care of at all - poor Cisco has had it pretty rough it sounds like, he'll probably be very happy to see you!!! hugs:)

Hosanna, I am so sorry to hear this.....People can be soooo stupid and at the expense of poor innocent creatures!
Bless your heart for caring enough to check back in on Cisco & for taking him back. Hugz to you.
Speaking of stupid, last Thursady I (as every Thurs) was dragging the trash can up the 300ft driveway out to the road,,,,now mind you, we get a lot of horseback riders up our road from neighboring mini ranches....anyhow, I spent 30 min & one full bucket,,, picking up broken glass from bottles, not to mention trash & cans etc....
It irritates the heck out of me when I see the glass because I know we have riders & their horses up & down here.....those idiots who drive through our way(it's a back way into Spokane) don't even have any regard that we have to clean up their mess let along worring about some poor horse stepping on the glass shards.....Did I mention some people are just plain stupid!!!!
Hosanna, give Cisco a big horsey smooch for me....and again bless your heart.

Grace, we had a similar problem out here, we put up signs letting the vandels and trash throwers know that they were on camera, put up dummy cameras and you would not beleive the differance.

hmmm, sounds like a good idea, except these fools usually drive like Bats outta H-double hockey sticks....it is a 45zone & yet the fools will blast by at 60+...even the motorcycles....but I am willing to try something, anything to protect the horses & their riders.

So terrible! Thoughtless. I did get our Scoutie-boy for free, and beamed just yesterday when my SIL said she couldn't believe he was the same horse as we brought home in November. I have a problem...I see everything the way it ought to be, not necessarily the way it is at the moment, you know? Anyway, I was tickled pink at the compliment. And our darling Scout is a dear horse with (hopefully) quality time ahead. Best guess is he's pushing 29, and has many stories/many owners. And the folks he came from did right by him. He just has less competition at our place, and he really shines now. You wouldn't know his age to see him come running and whinnying to the fence when we come. I love a horse that is so vocally happy to see you. :) Darn spunky old guy nearly bucked me first ride of the spring...I'm not used to a "bumpy" horse! LOL and I guess I'm a bit older now since I had my last riding horse. :)
They do sell some "hoof sealer". Not familiar with it, all my boys have been barefoot and lucky enough to be on clean ground no one can toss bottles on to. How sad. One more thing to look into I suppose. Think I'll stick to my trails/pasture and off the roads. Better for their feet anyway.

Oh, Hosanna...I'm so sorry to hear about poor Cisco! If I was closer I'd definitely take him on... a quiet gelding is exactly what I need right now, anyway... *sigh* I hope he's not in too terrible condition...wishing him a quick, CHEAP road to recovery!!!
