Well, Farmgirls . . .
. . . Peppermint Patty, one of our Longhorn heifers, gave birth to a bull calf today!!!
I haven't seen him yet, so don't know what name he should have. His daddy wasn't a Longhorn.

Oh I just love baby calf's, oh heck I love baby anything. I know you must be so excited and can't wait to get close to him. Post a picture when you can.

Thanks girls! It is fun . . .
In keeping with the "candy" theme (mom's name is Peppermint Patty) we have named him "NOUGAT". The dictionary definition for that is
. . . "a confection of nuts and fruit in a sugar paste".
He has red face/head and down his back. White sides and legs with the trademark Longhorn spots of red in the white areas. Will try to post a pic . . . if I can get it to work.
THANKS AGAIN! Perhaps, if one of the other Longhorn Ladies has a calf we'll have a "name the calf" contest.

He was up and running around this evening . . . I did take his picture. Will try to post it.
Hosanna, we (my siblings and I) did some bottle feeding of calves as we were growing up. We also bottle fed a LOT of lambs . . . my, my!!!
I'll see about the pic.

Congrats CJ and can't wait to see a picture of the new boy!!! We have 2 here...a brahma/angus and a jersey bull calf. Daisy Mae and Duke. I just love em both! They've been bottled fed from a few days old and doing great...so friendly you'd think it was me with one of the dogs laying under the shade tree in the front yard! I'm a softy I guess!

I bottle fed my 2 cow babies. It is fun when they're little but then they get bigger and want to knock the bottle out of your hand. That's when I went to the bucket. Even then I had to stand there and make sure they didn't butt it off the rail. They are 13 months old now and the biggest babies ever. I am afraid sometimes when I go out there with them because they still want to "play" and that's not fun when they are close to 1000 pounds! Mazie, the heifer, came up behind me once and head butted me on the rear and that hurts. I am going to try to milk her when she has a calf.
Have fun with yours. He sounds so sweet! I love the name.

Well, you guessed it!! Yesterday, "Snowflake" gave birth to her first calf, a little "girl". Snowflake (for obvious reasons) is mostly white. She is definitely Longhorn but her daddy was a white Longhorn.
Well, her baby is BLACK!!!! Talk about a "black and white" situation. Our daughter named her EBONY . . .
The daddy to EBONY and the previously mentioned "NOUGAT" is a big black angus.
I know, I know . . . I need to post pics. I have taken them but I haven't had time to download and figure it all out.
It's fun!!! And to think we had cows and calves all over the place the entire time I was growing up!!!

Congratulations CJ! I just love calves and would love to have one some day :) They are so cute! I know someone that has a cow named Snickers and Milky Way :)

When we said that Nougat (bull calf) would be banded and eventually be steaks and burgers in our freezer, someone said "can you REALLY do that, after you name them and everything?" I said, we certainly could . . . but the time they are big enough for butchering they aren't cute anymore and furthermore, that's the main reason for raising them.
But for now we just enjoy the cuteness of calves!!! :)

That little Nougat is so cute. I love the color with all the spots. And the little girl is adorable. I can't wait to breed my Mazie Mae. I want to wait til next year til she's closer to 2 years old.

Would you believe that these two babies have the SAME daddy?? Their mothers are both purebred Longhorns, but we couldn't find a Longhorn bull for breeding so the daddy is an Angus. The Longhorn coloring and characteristics were predominant for Nougat . . . he looks just like his mommy. However, you can see whose genes took over for EBONY. Her mom is a mostly white Longhorn with the typical red brindling markings on her neck and head. Interesting!!!!
THEY ARE CUTE!!! Of course by now, bigger but still CUTE!!!

I love new calves! Our Brahma/Hereford, "Bailey", gave us a gorgeous bull calf that we named "Angus". He was born in August too! He is no longer a "bull" however....We used to keep Longhorn's for a neighbor and we sure did like them! Congrats on your new additions!

They are just beautiful! Nothing is as cute as a little calf (to me anyhow!) I can hardly wait for May when Mona will have her next one. I have my fingers crossed for a heifer this time as always. So far she has had 2 bull and one heifer calf.
