Forgive me if this is the wrong place to post this, I just joined today!
I love making my own soap though, and wondered if anyone else here does?
BTW- I also make my own laundry soap. |

Hey Brenda, Welcome to the Farmgirl Connection. I am making soap too. But I am fairly new at it. Currently I make liquid laundry soap, dishwasher detergent and toothpaste. Still trying to tweek the dishwasher soap though. I still find some whitish powder on some of my dishes, and the dishwasher door does not seem to get cleaned like it did with store bought soap. Hmmmm Sheri

Welcome Brenda,
I make my own dishwasher soap. I want to venture into organic soap making with my daughter.
Sheri,
I use white vinegar in the rinse cycle and that takes off all the white residue and keeps the dishwasher clean too.

I am getting soap making lessons in a few weeks from a girl I met at the market. We are bartering a buck for her to breed her does in Dec. but she will be making soap in a few weeks. So I will get to finally learn how from someone who has done this for a while now. She doesn't live in a house so has to wait for good weather to make soap. This should be interesting.

I don't know what she lives in. She is part of a community called Sequatchie Valley Institute in Tn. not far from me. They live in a very wooded place and build homes from whatever is on the property. I haven't been there yet so am not sure but have seen pictures on their web site. There was a log home but it's open and they don't use electricity. So no AC and it gets humid so it's hard to make soap most of the time. They do alot of work shops and grow all their food and raise their owm meat. She has some goats of course for the milk and soap. The guy that wrote Wild Fermentation, Sandor Katz, goes their alot to give talks on fermenting. I want to meet him. They are all very interesting people. I want to live there myself except I'd have to have air conditioning! I'll let ya know when I go.

Hi Brenda! I make my own soap and I also sell organic soap on my etsy site. : ) It's been a very rewarding craft to learn and I absolutely love it.
A good source of soapmaking supplies is GloryBee. They have the fats, molds, oils, and all the extras.

Another rookie here, just made my very first batch last night! I am still waiting to uncover mine, but here's the recipe I used, from "The Soapmaker's Companion" by Susan Miller Cavitch:
Soap Essentials Bar
201 grams sodium hydroxide 1 lb. 3 oz (538.7 g) distilled water 1 lb. 5 oz (595.3 g) olive oil 1 lb. (454 g) coconut oil 14 oz. (396.9 g) palm oil 12 grams grapefruit seed extract (optional preservative) 7 tsp. (35 mL) pure essential oil or fragrance oil, optional
I mixed the lye solution and oils together at 100 F, and added the fragrance at trace before pouring into the mold. This makes 15 four-ounce bars.
Going to have to find a large-quantity supplier of coconut oil. Had to pay $15 for 1000 g. Yikes!

Hmmm...I wish I could be brave enough to try making soap on my own. I learn better watching someone though. I'd even love to learn how to make my own lye from ash..Lord knows I have plenty of ash LOL! Maybe not a good idea with little boys around al the time though. Maybe I'll wait on that until they're grown and out of the house. It just fascinates me because I grew up near the Frontier Culture Museum in Virginia (if you've never been there...SO COOL) and as a kid I would watch them make their own lye and soap on the farms.
Anyone know if there's a soap making DVD out there somewhere? Or a really good online tutorial? |

Have you searched YouTube? You can find just about anything there! I'm on dial-up here, so it's hopeless trying to watch a video on the internet.

Lori, you added the oils to the lye? I saw somewhere a lady mixed her lye and water then added the solid oils to melt them then the liquid oils then used her stick blender to mix then poured into molds. Is that what you did?
Have you uncovered yet?
