I have been looking at pictures of Buffs and there seem to be all different colors and shapes and sizes. I bought the golden yellow Buffs back in April along with a roo. The hens all have very pink, very little if any, combs. Jimmy Buffet the roo has a bright big pinkish red comb. Very much different than the hens. He also has no tail feathers yet. He's just started to get a little bigger than the girls and has been crowing for a few weeks now.
There is another one I am just not sure of now. It's bigger than Jimmy and has a reddish comb. I have not noticed it crowing if it's a roo. It looks like the hens except for the comb. I picked it up yesterday and we had a little talk. I looked at it really close and studied the others. I think it's a hen. And looking at some of these pics there are hens with slightly bigger darker combs. Maybe she's just more mature than the others?
I would love to see some of ya'lls Buff's. I can't post pics or I would. I am just interested in seeing others about the same age.

Kristen- Orpington is the type of chicken and Buff is the color. There are blue, black, white and buff color orpingtons. I have dial up and it would take me forever to post a picture of my Buff Orpingtons, but they have red combs just like my other chickens. Kris, Everything you said regarding your chickens, apply to mine as well. I bought mine the early part of May, when they were 2 days old. The roo is crowing already and has a bright red comb. The hens have very short pink combs.
So, I guess that is normal.
I was wondering about it too.
I think mine will start laying in October. Does that sound about right to you?

Lillian, I just googled Buff Orpington hens and roos and saw all kinds of colors. They are beautiful birds. I am very pleased with mine so far. And so friendly, too. They will let me pick them up and they follow me all over. Poor Jimmy is almost too chicken, though. I think when I get the other roos put up he will be more like a rooster. I have been working on the chicken wire on the stall and have it all ready now to round up the rogue roos tonight! I can hardly see for the sweat in my eyes. man, it's HOT out there today. I have stinkin' dial-up, too.
Gena, I got mine April 24th. So they're almost 3 1/2 months old. So I hope they start laying in October, too. Aren't they just the prettiest chickens? I love the pink combs. When they were little that's the way I could tell Jimmy from the others because his was bright pink. I can't wait til he is mature. Those are the most beautiful roosters I have ever seen. How many do you have?

"buff" Orpingtons will always be a buff or yellowish color. There are other Orpingtons out there that are brown, white etc but they are different varieties. I have 4 buffs. They are all yellowish in color but each is slightly different. All of mine have big bright red combs. If the bombs are pale in color it is likely because they are still young(not laying yet) or the are molting. If you look on my blog you can see pictures of mine. Youprobably need to go back to may or June to see pics though as I haven't put any recently.

Keep in mind when you google it searches for both words independently so you will get pictures labled with just buff, just Orpington and both. If you want to single out buff Orpington put it in quotation marks. Also the site searches for what other people have labled them and they could hbe labled them wrong. Look at backyardbirds.com. They have lots of info on breeds. Also check out hatchery pages. Since their content is monitored you will get more accurate information than you will through google.

Thank you Julie. I am still confused about the one that has a bigger comb and still looks like a hen. Until it crows it's a hen to me. It might have just matured faster than the others have. I'll look at your hens.

Well, I can see the difference in full grown hens and mine. Yours do have red combs now. Where mine are just pale pink.

Kris, I ordered 14 pullets and 2 cockrels. We didn't need any more than 7 hens and 1 roo, so I gave a friend of mine the ones we didn't need to keep. Last time we had 6 hens, and I was over run with eggs. I gave them to everyone I knew.
I just don't want to sell them.
I can't wait until they start laying. I'll let you know when they do. You let me know too. Yours should start laying a little sooner than mine.

I have all these Buffs plus 8 Barred Rock, 5 Americana, and 5 Ancona. Those Ancona are so small and they are the same age as most of them. I had 6 but one of them never did get any bigger than a little bird and one day the mama hen flogged her and she never got over that. She finally died last week. So sad. They are beautiful chickies. They are in the Leghorn family so I guess that's why they're so small. And they lay white eggs. And 5 of the OE Bantam hens. And a Welsummer and another Americana that are all grown and laying. So I should be rolling in eggs soon. I just get 2 a day now from the Welsummer and Americana. They are faithful girls. I love those 2.
I will let you know when the Buffs start laying.

Kris, I know this is a silly question, but do you sell your eggs? If you do, do you deliver them, or do people come to your farm? Maybe next year I will try to sell some (that means more baby chicks, HEHE)
My parents are going to be moving in with us at the end of the month, so I will be more tied down at home now.

Gena, I do sell eggs when I have an abundance of them. And that has been awhile. But soon I will have lots and I will sell them. I'm always afraid to sell eggs when I only have a few dozen because I have this fear they will just stop and I'll never get any more again. So only if I know they are in full laying mode. And I always have people that want my eggs. And when Bible study starts back up in Sept. I'll usually take eggs there and sell every one. People keep asking if I have eggs. The yolks in my eggs are so almost red. And they have gotten used to that. So when they buy from others they can really see the difference. So that's a good selling poing.
I can't sell at the market this year because they said anyone who sells eggs there has to take a candling class. And I am not going to do that. But I can sell from home. I sell them for $2 a dozen. And I have people save cartons for me, too.
That is neat your parents are moving in. I hope they are well and not too dependant on you. My friend up the road had both her parents there and they had to have constant care. I was with them at first while she worked but her mom had pancreatic cancer. SO as she got worse she had to have hosice come in and needed round the clock care. She died a few months ago and now her father needs someone there, too. He's good but very forgetful. CAn't even remember if he just ate! So he eats alot. So I admire you for doing this.

Gena- My mother sells her eggs. Neighbors from up and down the road will stop to buy her eggs. She sells them for two dollars a dozen. Some people even drive a little farther to buy her duck eggs. They are exceptionally good for baking. As a little girl I can remember going to Sherricks chicken farm to buy our eggs. On their back porch they had two fridges full of eggs and a dish of money setting out on the table to pay or make your change. But people started stealing the eggs and the money. So they stopped doing business like that.

Kris, my parents are not hardly mobile at all. My mother's mind is sharp as a tack, but she is so crippled she can hardly move. My dad's mind is going pretty fast. He gets very confused, but is able to move around somewhat. I just couldn't put them in a Nursing Home yet. I will do this as long as I can. I just want them to be happy and safe and cared for.
Toby- Isn't it ashame how people are now adays?
I long for the days you could keep your doors unlocked and never worry about it. Since I will pretty homebound, I may try selling eggs. Thanks for the info on duck eggs. I may try that too.

That is awful, Toby. I wish things like that didn't happen. And they would have probably just given people eggs if they'd just ask them. But they have to steal and make it bad for others. Too bad. Maybe they could use a locked box that was screwed down.
Gena, you will have your hands full soon, for sure. But what a great thing you are doing. Do you have family nearby to help out? You'll need it. And I hardly ever lock my doors here. I do when the grandkids are next door when I leave now because their momma doesn't always keep an eye on them and I don't want them in my hpuse while I'm not here. They make a mess.

Kris, you sound just like me. My daughter was going to move across the road from us, and I was scared to death if she did the kids would all be at my house ALL THE TIME. I was glad when it didn't happen. I love'em to death, but I need them to go home sometimes. The oldest he is 12, and he can eat you out of house and home!

They look just like my girls. And I do believe the bigger one that I have is a hen. Don't ya just love these chickens? They are so nice and friendly. I don't worry about the grands at all with these guys. Even the roo is great so far.

I know. I can't step out the door without something under my feet. And I am constantly counting. I feel like I am OCD about that lately. I have 49 hens now. And 8 roos. and down to 19 guineas, at last count. But that's all liable to change when the hubby gets back home! We may be having roast guinea fowl soon. Yummo!
