As far as Christmas goes, I'm cuurently working on:
A quilt for my SIL
Aprons for my MIL, grandma, and aunts
Canned jams and foods for others
Soap for others
I so prefer homemade gifts to recieve (but rarely get them.) I hope that others feel the same way! :)

I think aprons can become as addictive as shoes for some lol! I keep seeing more and more patterns and fabrics I want aprons out of

I agree. I have been telling a friend who has far better sewing skills than I, to make some aprons. I even gave her about 15 yards of "cow" fabric, I had been saving to make aprons with. |

| I'm with all of you on the aprons...I have to stay away from eBay and estate sales...I'm addicted for sure, for all kinds and unusual patterns too...I just used some vintage ones at my daughter's wedding to cover the cookies on the cookie table until time to eat, I had so many compliments on them and the "where did you get them all?" |

Hi all! This year will be a homemade Christmas at our house too. My daughter and I are making a cement stepping stone that she will decorate with pebbles for grampy, some dishcloths for grammy, possibly a doggie bed for Uncle T (he just got a new puppy and I have to make sure he didn't already get a doggie bed). My daughter will be getting some doll clothes for her Barbies and possibly some furniture (someone mentioned something about plastic canvas Barbie furniture that I'm going to look into). But I can never figure out what to make/get my husband. If he wants something, he buys it and if I ask him if there's anything he'd like me to make for him, he tells me not to waste my time he doesn't need presents. What kind of answer is that?!?!? So if anyone could give me an idea for a husband appropriate gift I would really appreciate it! Oh, by the way, we live in a very hot climate and so though I'm a knitter, I can't really knit him anything because he would never need to wear it!

Hi Melissa, LOL!! Sounds like our guys could be brothers!! Since we do not know your hubby's hobbies, it is kind of hard to give you a suggestion. Since it is hot where you are that is a challenge too.
One thing that does come to mind ( if you sew) is to make him his own personal duffel bag and fill it with all the things he needs for his car/truck. Example: Cleaning supplies for both inside and out of his vehicle, rags, sponges, wax, ground cloth, gloves, etc. You get the idea. Something he will use and appreciate

My husband is the same way. I would never buy him anything for his work or his hobbies....he just has it in his head what he wants and that's about it. My go-to-gifts are usually jeans/socks/undies....which can hardly be thought of as a "gift" I suppose.. He hates to be cold so I've gotten him flannel/fuzzy pj pants or fleece from the camping store (does double duty for motorcycle/work)... Oh..and this year for his birthday...got him a thermal cotton blanket for our bed. Why? Cause I am so hot and he's always cold and the blanket has kept him warm but this summer but hasn't overwhelmed the whole bed causing me to move to the couch!
The things I've made my hubby that have actually been a hit were knitted socks. He loves his hand knit socks. He doesn't wear them out but wears them at home when he's done with his day. The other thing that worked well were hand made "ditty" bags. I've made bags for headphones, cables, and misc gear. (He's an audio engineer). That kind of stuff is just so expensive and all it is, is just velvet or leather or fleece. Shoot, I can do that! ;-) Add some velcro or a tie, we're in!
Who knows? Maybe something like those socks would be just the ticket? (I made the neighbor a wool hat/scarf for keeping us plowed...he was digging that...)

OH...and I got a GREAT crockpot apple butter recipe from the farm kitchen thread that will be my holiday gift to secretaries/teachers and the like...a jar of that, a loaf of homemade bread, and homemade butter! |

Yummmm peaches.....
Robin..he does both. Today he's at the state fair with Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad). He's been on the road, in the studio, symphony orchestras, theatre, corporate audio, Jazz fest, Detroit Car Show, Super Bowl, churches....it's never been dull. Was on tour for a long while in the early 90's with Sawyer Brown.... We met while he was recording a live album of a chamber choir I was in.
Ooops sorry to steal the thread for a minute...back to those peaches...is that recipe in Farm Kitchen? And speaking of fruit butters and bread...thought I could put the two jars of butters with the bread in a basket with a liner... |

Star, I miss those days.....but I wouldnt do it now. Its hard with a little one. Especially being on the road. Wont happen.
I couldnt find the peach butter recipe. I only looked in Farm kitchen. We have yummy peaches around here, although my trees didnt fruit this year because of a late frost. |

Thanks girls for the tips! My husband is in law enforcement and doesn't really have a *hobby*. I know that sounds weird, but when he's not at work he's just sitting on the couch watching t.v. I guess I could classify him as a sports guy, but he doesn't really go to games and all that. He just watches them at home. So it's hard to come up with gifts since he doesn't have something I can always go to. My father loves tools, so I can always fall back on some cool new tool for him, but my husband has nothing that he's really into. I hear you about the jeans, socks, undies StarMeadow! I usually end up getting him stuff like that too and I feel like those are, I don't know, not very exciting gifts. It's nice to come up with something that get's a WOW! ;-) The duffle bag idea is a good one, so is the storage bags for things...He does have an ipod with accessories all over the house, maybe a bag for all that stuff...and one for his gun cleaning gear! I could even do some kind of funny embroidery on the front! You girls! That's great, now I have something! Thanks a heap, you all have got my creative juices flowing!

| Hey Melissa...what about a charging station for those electronic gadgets? I know that's not a handmade gift. Or maybe a quilted/pocketed thing (LOL...I don't know what you call it) but you put it over the arm of the couch and it holds the tv guide/remotes/etc? :-) Then again...this one is pretty cool and it's only $14.95 at http://www.organize.com/soorbl.html AND, there are some pretty nice "silky" boxer shorts you can pick up! |

A charging station is a great idea! He's got a cell, the ipod, his work flashlight (weird, but it plugs in to charge), etc. That's another great idea! It feels like this Christmas will be a gizmo accessories organizer keeper thingies kind of Christmas! I love it! I'm going to have to post all of my problems in the chats since you girls seem to help me solve them so quickly! ;-)

I've figured everyone out and now am getting started! Cross-stitch for my Mom, a set of 3 framed houses to match the guest room she just redecorated. My Dad is getting a stepping stone for his garden - one that my 3 year-old will decorate while it's wet. My brother will be getting a scarf/cap combo with fire axes on them (he's a fireman) and as long as I can knit them, he'll be getting those! My daughter will be getting a doll house from her grandparents, so it's my job to make all the furnishings and finishing touches, as well as a few new doll clothes (which I'm having trouble making without a pattern). My husband will be getting what you lovely ladies suggested - a gear themed Christmas. I'm going to make him a bag for all his gun cleaning junk (he's a cop) and a bag for all his iPod cables. I'll be buying him a charging station for his cell and flashlight, etc. and he may be getting something else too, I haven't come up with it yet. Men are so hard to buy/make for! Good luck to all of you on your Christmas lists!

Hattah - I know what you mean...I can't wait til I'm finished with all my Christmas presents so I can make one of those shawls for myself - hopefully before Christmas so I can wear it when we go out and about to all the family gatherings!
