Do any of you drink Kombucha tea? I just order a fungus thing (it isn't really a fungus perse) off of E-Bay. If it arrives healthy and I am able to get it going here I would be happy to send people Kombucha funguses if you would like.

My mom makes and uses this tea all the time. It kinda grosses me out, so I have never tried it.
I do know that mom and dad have drank this for 5+++ years. They say that the taste of the tea is different depending what sign of the moon the tea "comes off".
If you have any questions I would be glad to ask mom for you.

| My boyfriend's mom used to make this all the time. Doug says the taste was usually a "sparkling apple cider" like taste. He also said that when the "fungus" started to get "spotty" you should switch to using one of it's children because that caused it to be a different taste too. From what I understand you brew tea (black, green etc) and add in quite a bit of sugar and then float the fungus on top. It reproduces in 7 days and during the 7 days it changes the chemical properties of the sugar tea into the Kombucha tea. Supposedly there isn't any sugar compound left afterwards. |

There seems to be a ton! I haven't tried it yet, so this is just internet research:
Acts as a gentle laxative, helping avoid constipation.
Aids in the relief of arthritis.
Cleanses the colon and gall bladder.
Aids in healthy digestion
Relieves colitis and stomach cramps.
Returns gray hair to it's natural color.
Helps stop non-infectious diarrhea.
Relieves bronchitis and asthma.
Clears up Candida yeast infections.
Regulates the appetite and reduces fat.
Aids with stress and insomnia.
Improves eyesight, cataracts and floaters.
Relieves headaches including migraines.
Puts Lupus into remission.
Helps reduces the alcoholic's craving for alcohol.
Eliminates menopausal hot flashes.
Clears acne, psoriasis and other skin problems.
Thickens hair and strengthens fingernails.
Enhances the sense of smell.
Vitalizes the physical body and adds energy-including sexual energy!
All the claims are very similar to these. These are just what it has been used for or reported benefits so I am not quite sure how true all of them are.
Here is a quote from an article that seemed a little more scientific:
Based on scientific research, there have been several observations about Kombucha tea which have been reproduced below. In general, it has been observed to be efficacious against a wide spectrum of diseases. While it does not have any specific action on particular illnesses, it systematically detoxifies the body and has an overall beneficial effect. It has a general overall toning-up effect and improves blood circulation. It is especially beneficial for people who are slowly aging.
Doctors who did research on it report that some of the other beneficial effects noted are clearing up of constant headaches, gout, rheumatism and general aging problems such as arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, etc. They attribute this to the high vitamin content in Kombucha tea.
It is also a metabolic stimulant for some and assists the body in excretion of disease toxins. It also helps in digestive disorders because of its ability to balance and normalise intestinal organs.
I am not quite sure what I believe yet, but am willing to see! |

Wow again - that's an impressive list of things - what exactly IS a kombucha? I was asking a friend here, and she said she thought it was a mushroom of some type

| Technically it is not a mushroom. It is a symbiotic realtionship of a yeast and certain bacteria. They grow a membrane sack around themselves and mush together. Most people call it a mushroom because it has the look of a tan cooked mushroom. It is pancake looking. (round and a little thick) you can google them and get lots of pictures. |

When you have a "baby" culture ready, I'd like to get one from you.
I killed my culture with neglect this past year.
I have been buying a bottled kombucha since from time to time, it's good but just pricey.
I have been saving bottles I can use for a new batch when I get a culture.

How much was your culture? I saw some sites advertising for $50!!! Traditionally you aren't even supposed to sell it- you are always supposed to give it away-
I wonder what a "used up" Kombucha would do for a compost heap! I bet there wouldn't be anything left! LOL |

I think it was $15 or $20 (3 years ago).
I don't remember if that included shipping at the time.
But their are lots of places that only charge for shipping and packing.
Sounds like there are other uses for extra cultures, maybe pot scrubber?

Hi Karen-
Thanks for you interest. My horrible roommates threw my Kombucha culture away! I am going to get another off Ebay where I got the first, but I will probably wait until after my pregnancy or at least until the end of the month when I have my next doctor's appointment so I can ask her about it.
The Kombucha I got off E-bay was only 3 bucks so not bad compared to the sites selling for $50!
I only had the chance to make one Kombucha culture. I put too much sugar in that batch because it was really sweet afterwards but I felt really good when I drank it. I totally recommend it! |

| I am not sure- I know they make a Kombucha Extract tea that you can buy at my local co-op. Its a great idea but I must say the Kombucha Extract Tea did not even come close to the real thing! |
