Okay, we took a five gallon bucket of water, and 3 bars of castile soap with coconut, one cup borax and one cup washing soda. It keeps solidifying at the top. What do we do? Will it still be usable? Please give some suggestions as to what the problem may be.

Hey mom! My friend Heather at work makes the liquid laundry soap too. She has to shake hers up when she's ready to use it. I'd say get a stick and stir it up when you get ready to use some. It should not affect the quality of the soap.

We have been stirring it, but it continues to stay in huge chunks, or a big mass at the top. Broke it all up by hand, mixed it, and again it is a big clump.

I only make the dry laundry soap now. It saves steps and time, plus the mess.

No, I did not heat it. I had made some previously which worked fine, just tap water. However, helping a friend make some, it did not work as well. Any suggestions on resurrecting it? Also, do we need to add more than one cup each of the borax and washing soda? Is there a way to save this five gallon bucket and be able to use it?

Mine gels at the top, too - if it gets too thick, I've simply added more water to it to thin it down a bit. Still works great - and I just give it a quick stir with my measuring cup (that I use as my scoop) before adding it to the washer. Definitely don't throw it away!!! It'll be fine to use, I would think.

Sheri- To properly mix everything to be in a true liquid (part gel, kindof egg drop soup consistency) you really need to hear the washing soda, borax, and soap to just shy of boiling. You can try breaking up the solid and reheating it in roughly equal batches, but I have never done that before so I can't say for sure if it will work. Honestly what I would do is scoop off the hard stuff- that is going to be your washing soda and borax. And then take out some of your water, approximatly a gallon, and re-add about 4-5 cups of both borax and washing soda and heat to just shy of boiling, then re-add to your 5 gallon bucket. That would be more to the consistency that I usually make.

Thank You for your suggestions. I passed the info on to my relative in St Louis. I was there last week end and we tried to make this soap. She did as you said and heated the lumps with liquid on the stove, and she said it helped alot. Turns out, we were mixing the brew on her basement floor, and they keep the temperature very cold. Apparently the basement floor was extremely cold, and when she stuck her hand in the bucket she realized, it was too cold for the soap to dissolve, and so she was working to get that situation changed. Plus, now we both know to heat it on the stove first.

I have made this laundry soap several times. What I do is grate the soap. Bring about a gallon of water to a boil. Add the grated soap. Let it disolve. Add the Borax and washing soda. Let it disolve also.Then pour into a large bucket. I use a drywall bucket. Add very hot water to fill the bucket. Mix well. Let cool. Do not store in a cold place. You may need to mix the soap from time to time.

Thank You for your suggestions. Would you mind sharing the amounts of soap, borax and washing soda that you use? I like mine, but do wonder if I have the right amounts.

I've now switched to dry soap, but I used to make liquid with 16 cups boiling water, 1 bar of soap, 1 cup baking soda, and 1-1/2 cups borax. I didn't have a big enough pot for this, so I cut the recipe in half. I found 2 things that helped reduce the clumpiness. 1- use an electric hand mixer to mix it all up, and mix it up about every hour or so for the first 4-8 hours. 2- For some reason, when I mixed it together in my super large ceramic baking bowl, it didn't clump hardly at all!

I make enough for a 5 gallon bucket as well. I melt a bar of Zote (pink) in my canning pot then add 1-1/2 cups of borax, 1-1/2 cups of washing soda and 1-1/2 cups of all fabric bleach. one at a time - off heat - letting each one dissolve. I then pour it into my drywall bucket and add additional hot water from the tap rinsing out my pot anything that is left in there.
I sure hope you can salvage your pot.

Alee to the rescue again!
I do the powder soap too, I don't like the mess and time of the liquid.
And as a spot remover, I rubbed my bar of laundry soap,( made by, none other than Alee) on a spot of blood, washed as usual and no spot was left! Love Alee's soap!
For tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, but keep me, guide me, love me, Lord just for today.
