i was wondering if there other gals out there that lack a microwave... ever since i was out of high school (10 years ago) i've never had one. mostly because everywhere i lived, there wasn't enough room. but i really don't miss them. it takes more planning to re-heat a meal in the oven, but i got used to it. i don't think i would ever need one because i've gotten so used to it!

A cute story to share... When my daughter (who is now 34) was about 12, our microwave broke. She was almost inconsolable. When dh asked her why she was so upset, she replied, "Now how are we going to boil water?" LOL! We relied so heavily on that microwave, she had no clue you could boil water on the stove top. She has grown up to become an excellent cook, but we were worried back then!

We chose to live without one for a couple years (due to reading some interesting *read = scary* things about microwaves) and I loved it. But then we moved to our current house and it had one built in and I hate to say it, but we've been using one every since - my hubby especially loves it. I hate that I use it, but it is very convenient. If we ever move to another house (hopefully to one out in the country soon!) I'd like to go back to not having one. I really think it just kills most if not all of the nutrients and vitamins in our food. However - nothing beats the convenience of one - sadly enough. Someday I'll be microwave-free again and I look forward to it. :o)

Mine broke months ago and we've been fine without. I do have a small toaster oven though. It was given to me by a friend so I didn't have to spend the money on it at all. I use that to reheat stuff. Just yesterday, I reheated spaghetti for my 9 year old with no problem. I could do one large serving...if I needed to reheat for the fam, I'd have to either do stovetop or oven.
It has allowed me to stay away from all the "instant" foods too. Easy Mac.. wave whatever... I think it's been a good thing. Even my hubby doesn't mind when he has to reheat coffee (I've suggested just making a smaller quantity but he has other ideas...) LOL |

I have one. It was a gift from a friend when I moved here. I hardly ever use it. IF it ever breaks down I don't want another one that's for sure.

We don't have one anymore. Our 14yr. ds over cooked in 3 of them and no more. So we have a small (toaster oven size) convection oven purchased at walmart. I also bought a couple non-stick & small pans to reheat things quickly. This takes a few minutes more than the microware. Our older kids come home for a visit & say, "we're buying you a new microwave" and I tell them I'd take it back. Even my dear husband is getting used to it!!!

I went without a microwave for years and never missed it. My sister gave me one for Christmas a couple of years ago and I use it occasionally but would not miss it if I didn't have it. I also have a counter top convection/toaster oven and love it. I use it 100 times more than the microwave. If it breaks, I will replace it. I will not replace the microwave.

Our last microwave went with the house we sold ( it was a built in style). Once we were settled in here, my BF wanted to buy me one and I yelled " NO!! I don't want one!! " He thought I was crazy at first, however, we do not miss it at all. Guess it is one of those things that you use while you have it, however, you really don't miss it once it is gone.

I do use the one at work for heating lunch from time to time.
I rarely use mine here at home, it's used more for heating rice packs for sore muscles than cooking or reheating.
I used to love it, the first microwave we had was back in the 80's, a gift from my FIL.
It was only a 600 watt, but I think it was way better quality that today's units.
I'm just sick of using it, I like stove top cooking and so the microwave sits, even for re-heating things we use the stove top.
I have zero extra counter space so if the 'wave were to go... I could keep my mixer upstairs instead of the basement!

We have gone through 4 microwaves in 18yrs and we only use them for reheating something. The kids and hubby use it way more than I do but I just declared a few days ago that when this one goes I will not buy another one...you would have thought that I declared a world war or something...well the commotion that ensued was a lively discussion until someone remembered the spare microwave in the barn!!!! (Me and DH each had one when we married) Well, that quieted the troops down but I will never have another one even when the spare goes...just dont see the need.

The only thing I have used my microwave for in at least 10 yrs or more, is to heat wet towels for stiff muscles. Oh, and I have stored things inside of it also, LOL.

We never had one until someone gave us one for Christmas. Several years ago it blew up I guess. My kids wanted to get another one, but we are not going to.

sue, i loved your story! very cute....
T, you make a good point about it allowing us to stay away from those processed foods... my friend is always like " you should try this instant whatever" and i have the excuse that i don't have a microwave, so i never eat that junk.
i have to say it was nice to have one at work when i worked... and for my hubby to have one at work. merely for the fact that cold lunches like sandwiches get boring after awhile. it's nice to reheat some leftovers at work. so for that reason, those microwaves help us mix it up a bit and have good lunches... i always look forward to those leftovers! and people are always like "oh, that looks and smells so good!" it's nice to show off those homemade meals at work...
i would like a microwave once and awhile to heat rice/bean bags... i remember my doctor suggested using one once and i told him i didn't have a microwave (this was even before i was a country girl) and he thought it was the weirdest thing.

I have not had one for years either. People are amazed by this but I really don't notice. My roommate was thrown off at first by now he is totally used to it too. Those things take up too much space!

I read somewhere that microwaves change the molecular structure of food. Ever since then I have shied away from using it. i am trying to get my daughter (24) to reheat food on the stove or in the oven, it's a hard sell, lol. I store things in the microwave in order to detour her from using it.

Three months ago we sold our house which included the built in microwave. We are renting until the next house is ready and I just didn't take the time to go out and get one. I did not miss it. I just heated things up on the stove. Last week our daughter came by with a microwave that someone had given her. Hers is built in so she gave it to us. Now I am using a microwave....again. I could easily go without it...except for heating up those rice socks that my DH loves.
