I have been using a recipe for home made dishwasher soap, of borax and washing soda. Also I put vinegar in the rinse aid compartment. However, I get a white, powdery film on all my dishes. I do not like this, dishes feel dirty. Clear glasses, filmy white. What can I do, and keep using home made dishwasher soap?
Thanks for any help,
Sheri

Hey Mom! I wonder if it has something to do with your water quality? No clue, just throwing that out there.

I had that same problem with mine. I read someplace...not sure where...to add several packets of lemon-lime koolaid mix to it to prevent that. It seems to work but now I'm really not sure how much to add per batch.

The lemon lime Koolaid is interesting. I think the ingredient that you are adding that is effective is the citric acid. You can have your local pharmacy order it in for your or order it from the internet. That would have to be more cost effective.

It is the citric acid. You can also use Fruit Fresh. Actually the Kool Aid is really cheap if you can get it on sale.

I always had this exact same problem and gave up on homemade dishwasher soap! I make *literally* everything else - cleaning wise, but this is the only "cleaner" I buy - but only because the homemade stuff left that nasty film on my dishes - if I could find a solution, I'd give it a try again.
Question: if you use kool-aid, doesn't it deposit a color on your dishes??

Sarah- No- the koolaid color is water soluable, so the rinse cycle would take care of any coloring left over.

How much citric acid do you use?

Such a smart girl our Alee! I do like the idea of the citric acid. Wish I had known about that before my recipes got published.

Alee, I made the dishwasher soap and just used it for the first time tonight. It really works! All the dishes were clean, no film on the glasses. It even got the little frying pan clean. I used vinegar for the rinse. It just feels good to know it's homemade and works, too. I have always used like 7th generation products since I got my dishwasher a year ago. But it's really expensive. I made a double batch of yours so we'll see how long this lasts. Thanks again for the recipe.

Kris

You know, this very same thing happens to my dishwasher, but I use regular store bought detergent. It leaves a white powder on all of my dishes. Weird!

Chelsey- what brand are you using? You might want to try the homemade stuff so you can control how much citric acid is in the wash to control the residue or try swithching brands. Do you use vinegar in your rinse aid recepticle?

This is VERY cool. I've been using a product called "Lemi-Shine," and I'm guessing that the active ingredient in it is citric acid (thanks, Alee!!!), too. So... I'm going to order some and try this recipe, too.

It's really exciting to me because we just got a dishwasher a few months ago - it's one of those weird "portable" ones that you hook up to the sink, but it IS nicer to have one -- especially after a big meal!

XOXO, Libbie

You should be able to buy citric acid in bulk at any health food store, too. This would be pure citric acid, unlike some of the other purchased products (like the fruit fresh). Or ... you can order it online from places like this, for example: http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/search/search.php?refine=y&keywords=citric+acid&x=9&y=11

Also, I've read (somewhere) that if you're going to use Kool-Aid, you should only use the lemon kind, because the others can stain the inside of some dishwashers. I have a Bosch dishwasher and it has an stainless steel-clad inside, but most DW's have porcelain or something that looks like white plastic that would probably get stained from the colored Kool-Aid.

I use "natural dishwasher" soap but I put vinegar in the rinse compartment AND with the soap compartment. It bubbles up but if I snap the little door shut it works very well and all the dishes come out super sparkly!

I belong to a Yahoo! Group where we have been discussing homemade dishwasher soap recipes. Kosher salt is the 4th ingredient I couldn't seem to think of last night (the mind goes, you know).

Anyway, here is a link to that group if anyone is interested. You can join there too, if you wish.

I will try the citric acid ingredient tip...the white film as been a problem too. The other maybe adding too much soap into the dishwasher cups.

I'm so excited to have found this information. I'm going to mix up a batch and try it out. I think I'll try it without the Kosher salt first and see how that goes. I love being able to be all "natural!"
