| I have massive tomatoe plants filled with green tomatoes. Everyday Im checking looking for them to change color but so far, still green! Is there anything that would cause them to delay ripening? My peppers next to them are fine. Thanks! |

This may sound crazy, but someone told me that tomatoes are competitive plants, and if you hang some really red cloth in the tomato patch it will speed up the ripening as they want to get as red as that cloth...I haven't tried it yet, but may go put some out there right now! I will just tie it to the tomato cages. I have one that looks red ripe and another that is on its way. Good luck!

My tomatoes are green here in IL. I am going to pinch the tops off & see if that motivates them to see red. I'll also hang a red cloth by them. I'm that desperate for my first home grown tomato of the year!

Hey Jenzi,
I'm in Pikesville, Maryland. I've already harvested two weeks of red and orange tomatoes. A lot are still green but a lot aren't. I've been fertilizing my garden every two weeks. Tomatoes are hearty "eaters" and need lots of fertilizer. Maybe this would help you. The only plants that really haven't done well for me, this year, are the squash. I've only gotten 4 zucchini, 5 yellow squash, and 8 patty pans. Now, the squash plants are getting the dreaded spotty mold on them. It won't be long before I'll be pulling them out of the garden. Drat!! I love squash and will have to buy zucchini. I make tons of zucchini relish and I'm almost out of my stock.

I finally got a RIPE tomato before the darn ole chickens got it!!! I am so happy! It was in the middle of the plant so they might not have been able to get to it in there. Ha Ha! I just had it on a tomato sandwich. It was quite good. Sorry hubby. You can have the next one this time.
That is so interesting about the red cloth. I will be checking in to see how it's going and who gets the first ripe mater. Good luck, ya'll!
And if they stay green just have fried green tomatoes. That's the next best thing, ya know. I have a good recipw for them if ya'll want it.

Oh Kris, sorry to hear you tomato went to the chickens! I finally had one ripe cherry tomato today! My vegetable garden is organic and I have to be patient with how long everything takes to ripen.

Mine is too. It does take longer than a Miracle Grow garden, doesn't it? I never thought about it that way. I talk to other people and they say throw some 10-10-10 or MG or whatever on them, that'll kick start them. And I just say ok. Whatever.

| Ok I know this sounds weird, but my Mom called me today asking if I could remember what magazine told about "pruning" tomatoes (pinching off suckers that grow) because they won't rippen with too many suckers. I really don't know anything about it, and don't know if she found the magazine. Maybe you could do a search if you want to pursue it. |
