He made it half way through one last summer. About a year ago we noticed some cancer bumps on his tail but we decided to forego treatment, and just let nature runs it's course. He seemed happy to just continue going on.

In January we had noticed he was looking very sluggish, like the 13 years had finally caught up with him. I only hoped he would be able to make it to enjoy one last summer outside.

Last night I noticed huge tufts of fur all over the house. He had a mournful cry, as if to say help me. He's limping now and constantly licking his hind legs. We called the vet and my husband has agreed to be the one to take him in.

I really wanted it to be me. I really wanted to be the brave one to go, and be at his side but I am not strong enough. I nearly lost it this morning just thinking about it. This has been a hard, hard day for me, my husband and our kids (who have never lost a pet before).

I know on a farm, life and death are always present. I am just not sure if I will ever get used to this type of loss.

I am so sorry, Tracy. Having just lost one of my kitties a few weeks ago, I know how devastating it can be. You are doing the right thing, remember. He was telling you it was time--and remember, he will always be with you, he has just changed form.

My thoughts are with you. I know how hard it is to lose a furry member of the family.

Take care.

Tracy- We are facing the same problem here- my 15 yo cat has kidney failure and we are not treating it. I cried all the way through your post and am still fighting the tears. A great big hug and a prayer for your family are headed your way.

That's so sad and sweet, too, Tracy. I know how you feel. I would not make it, either. But he knows you loved him. What a happy cat he must have been. I'm sure ya'll have wonderful memories.

Hugs to you all, Kris

Tracy,
I am so sorry. I know how painful this is. We had to put our beloved pet of 13 years down a couple of years ago. It truly is a painful thing to have to do. But try and be comforted with the fact that, at least animals do#324;t have to suffer so terribly. May the memories of your cat, be a great comfort to you. And they really will be, with time.

OH, I'm so sorry. We lost our beautiful cat, Zen last October. I still miss him.

You are doing the right thing for him though. He will not suffer now.

Love,
Tanna

We buried him at his favourite haunt, the woods behind our house where the creek runs close by. I planted some wild lilies above his grave. I hope they bloom for years to come.

I'd like to go out and find a charm, like an angel cat charm for the kids, something to help them through this. We were all crying so muc today. It's been really hard.

Vet said he had some tumours and a heart murmur so he wouldn' have lasted much longer anyway.

Thanks so much for all the support ladies. It's nice to know I am not alone.

I am sorry Tracy. I have a hard time losing my pets too. I get really emotional. It will get better, and I'm sure you know that.

I am so sorry Tracy. I love my 3 kitties so very much too. It's so hard to lose a pet who brings you such unconditional love and joy. I know your family is suffering right now and I think wanting to do something for your children to help them is so thoughtful of you. There are a few sites that have the Rainbow bridge poem and I will list a couple. The first site holds a Monday candlelight ceremony that you may enter your pets name in or even go so far as to have a picture of your kitty posted and choose a virtual cemetery site, headstone, toys, plants for a fee. http://www.rainbowbridge.com/Poem.htm The 2nd site is a nice site where you can create and print out a free Rainbow Bridge poem with your pets name. http://rainbowbridge.catsplay.com/ Big huggzz for your family.

I'm so sorry, Tracy, but he is in a place he loves, and made whole again. That's all we can hope to do for our fur-friends...it does get better, but do give yourself and the kids time. Encourage them to talk about it. There is a book that my mother bought me when I lost my cat a few years ago...it's called 10 Good Things about Barney, written by Judith Viorst. It's about a boy, whose kitty, Barney, passes. And they stand over his grave and say 10 good things about him. Tear jerker, but really theraputic, and helps children deal with the loss a bit better.
