Gals help me out please---I spotted a groundhog in my yard today...thank goodness my cat was guarding the fort=asleep but none the less the groundhog left. My ? is can I pick my green tomatoes and bring them in the house to have them turn red?
I really don't want to lose anything I've grown.
Thanks...you can tell this is my first veggie garden---I am as green as the tomatoes.

Those wild animals sure are pesky! I've seen a lot of groundhogs around here lately too. The racoons got into my corn the other night and destroyed about 10 ears. ME MAD!!!! as my 3-year old grandson would say...
If your tomatoes have started to turn just a little, they will continue to ripen if you pick them. If they are all green and hard, my experience has been that they just stay that way until they rot or dry out.
My husband recommends "Shoot them!" but since I've never fired a gun, this isn't a very practical suggestion. I've been thinking about a live trap -- but in the meantime, I staked down the bottom of my deer fence with garden staples about every foot all the way around the garden. I was thinking about spraying some pepper-garlic based repellent, too.

I have picked our tomatoes green, mostly because of the critters that come out in the night. The tomatoes do turn red. Sometimes it takes 3 to 4 days.

Beverly, I had a big ground hog problem and still have some. And now we have rabbits out there. But I got a live trap from the animal shelter and put some cantalope in it. They love that. That's what they were eating at the time. So I put the trap out and set it. The next day there was one in it. It was very hot and I guess the poor thing got all stressed out and it died. I really didn't mean for that to happen. We were going to take it up the mountain. But they are the ugliest critters beside possums I ever saw. I have 2 Rat Terriers and a Lab and they hate those things. Chase them all over. It's funny to watch them. And I agree with Brenda. I had a green tomato in the kitchen for weeks and it finally turned red but it was leathery and tough.
