We have a lemon tree full of lemons that are full of brown marks that look like straches. Does anyone know what this is? Last November when we picked the lemons the same marks were there. I see butterflies on the tree all the time. Could they be leaving marks there?

Thanks Teresa:
The extension agent said he thinks it is due to bird scratchings. I really don't think so. I never water the lemon tree. But, it has rained alot in the last few weeks. Thanks for the information.

it could be leafminer trails:
----------------------
found this:
-----------
Asian leafminer: This leafminer attacks the new flushes of growth when the developing leaves are only about an inch long, leaving serpentine trails from their feeding and causing stunting and distortion of the leaf. Occasionally, trails or mines occur on fruit as well. Each growth flush is susceptible to attack, of which four usually occur in March, May, July and September. The spring flush is least damaged, since the leafminer does not overwinter well, but the later flushes can be devastated.

There are no chemical controls available for home use, although citrus spray oils do deter infestation if the application is timed to the development of a new flush of growth. Otherwise, it is best to try to ignore the damage; leafminer will not kill the tree and indiscriminate spraying kills a lot of the natural predators and parasites that help to keep leafminer populations down.

Tina:
How kind of you to post that information for me. I appreciate your posting. Thanks. I am guessing that the Asian leafminer is some kind of insect or bug. I'll have to look that name up. Thanks a million.

the leaves of your lemon tree will have "paths" across them too if the leafminer is the culprit..you'll see like squiggly lines across some leaves.

Tina!!!!!!!!!!
I think you solved our lemon tree problem. Thank you, thank you, thank you. There are squiggle lines across some (alot) of the leaves.
I have several friends with lemon trees that have the same problem. I will let them know about the leafminer. And I have seen what I thought were butterflies all around the lemon tree. Okay, so next year I'll have to spray the tree. Again, thanks a million for the information.

glad I could help.
once I read your description about scratchy lines I started some research and found that info for you. hope you can share the info with the cooperative extension folks...maybe they weren't aware of it?but once they know exactly what it is they might offer some more suggestions for you(??) for your area. good luck.

Hi Tina:
I will let our cooperative extension team know about this. I assume they, like me, were not aware of this leafminer. Thanks again, Tina, for the information.
