| Hi my name is Kathy and i live just outside of San Antonio on 12.5 acres. We finally decided to start with some chickens and then possibly go into goats but we need to build a coop first and then fence in our property for goats. I need some help on chicken coops. Any suggestions? We have Fox, Racoons, squirrels and Hawks out here. But more Racoons than anything. So I need something that the Racoons cannot get into. We have been here for 3 years now and it seems our land just keeps going up we first started with 2 acres, then 5 and now we are on 12.5 and I do Believe this is where we will stay until we retire. So its time to get some use out of this property We are on a hill with a fantastic view of the lake so do not have alot of flat property accept where the house is on this hill. Any chicken coop ideas will be greatly appreciated. Kathy in Texas |

Hi Kathy!! Welcome to the group..you are among chicken lovers here..if you look in the barnyard buddies section you will find lots of coop ideas I bet...if not we will all have suggestions I am sure..we are a chatty bunch!!
YOur place sounds terrific...isn't it fun to be in the place you plan to stay? I love that feeling!!

| Thanks for the welcome. I cant wait to get started with the chickens. Its really exciting. I use to raise parakeets and cockatiels years ago so it couldnt be much difference. Kathy |

hi kathy and welcome .. wowzer! with all those wild critters, i'd say you best be making a little corner of your bedroom to keep those chickies safe!
the only thing i use my 'chicken coop' (well .. it's actually a Hen Laying Box) is to store my cookbooks in it!
i thing we have several texans amongs us gurlfren! welcome! welcome!

| I apreciate the welcoms. Still have not see any chicken coop picture even after checking in the Barnyard Buddies section. So I will be waiting patiently. Also I have not figuted out how to post pictures. any suggestions? Kathy |

posting pictures ..there is for sure a thread about that in the tech support section...we all struggle with it!! I think it was Clare who explained it in an easy to understand way. You first have to put your pictures online in an album like Photobucket then they can be downloaded. If you need help, email me, but honestly I think it is explained better in that thread.
I will search around for the chicken coop plans..I know someone had posted a link to some cute ones...

Welcome from another newbie and fellow Texas farmgirl. I'll have to look up your town in my Texas atlas.
I hope you find some coop plans to suit your situation. I'll see what I have saved, but will post them in Barnyard Buddies, okay.
I'm wondering what what your screen name means? Want to share?

Welcome Kathy!!!
I'm just right down I-10 East from ya' in the Houston area. You are gonna fit right in and make lots of gal-friends.
Chicken coops....yep, I remember discussing coops on a couple of topic threads in the barnyard section. Coops can be fancy and expensive or made from scrap wood and chicken wire.
One quick way to put a coop up is to purchase dog run fencing. They are usually sold as a set of 4 walls with a gate. The fending is 6 ft high. The whole thing can run a couple hundred dollars, but it's a fast fix. You can add tin sheeting to the top for the roof. You should also dig in some tin around the perimeter so the coons can't dig under. Laying boxes and roosting poles can be added and you'll have some happy chickens. With all your acreage, you could also, with some help from hubby, move the fenced coop to another location....say, like if you want the chickens to get some new grass or if you want to use the area the cage is in. It's not too heavy, just wobbly. we've moved'em best with someone on each corner for balance.

| Hey everyone well after a long day doing errands and going to a meeting with hubby we are finally home. Someone asked what my screen name means. Well we are avid Scuba Divers and that is where the scuba somes from the rest of it is we usually go to Cozumel so that is where the coz comes in . Anyway we are leaving this sunday for a week in Cozumel to do some scuba diving. I will be looking for those coop plans either here or in the barnyard. Again thanks for the warm welcome.
