hello everyone i just wanted to say hey to you all. I live in Portland with my husband and four kids, all older but they're still my babies  I hope to chat with you all here - a bit about my new adventure. I quit my job of 6 years - my reason? I told them that I need to go home to dig in my garden and play with my dog. I have a project list a mile long but I can't wait to slow down and take care of home and hearth. anyway I ordered Mary Jane's bakeover sampler - I bought her book about 8 months ago and I loved it, it spoke to my heart. I live in the city but was raised by a farmgirl and I didn't know how much rubbed off. I have plans for to enlarge the garden, I have berries already and building a chicken coop this summer. Does anyone out there know much about urban chicken coops? Anyway I look forward to learning alot from you farmgirls. |

Welcome miss cindy! I love that you just up and quit and what a great reason- diggin in dirt is the best. I can't wait to start planting. I'm certain you will find many great words of wisdom and some wonderful friends as well.

Cindy -- Welcome! We're almost neighbors. I live in La Center, WA which is about 20 miles north of Portland. Digging in the dirt is the perfect reason for quitting a job! There are lots of great plans on the internet for urban chicken coops. Here's one I found http://www.cutecoops.com/ . I won't be using this one as I'm not paying big bucks but it has some cute ideas. Check back in previous threads under Barnyard Buddies. Someone was talking about small coops on there.
Mine is just a little old fashioned garden where the flowers come together to praise the Lord, and teach all who look upon them to do likewise.

Welcome, Cindy!
We have a lot in common already. I'm glad you did what you knew you had to do. And I agree with Jan, work really does get in the way. I'd much rather "really work" doing the things I love to do; like garden, yard work, sewing, etc. Kudos to you for your decision.
I know you will find lots of interesting news, information, suggestions and wonderful wisdom from all the ladies here. And we will also be anxious to hear how staying home and playing in the dirt and with your dogs is going for you and how your chickens are doing, too. Please keep us posted.

I haven't built a chicken coop, but have been scouring the Internet for plans for one that I could put up here on my suburban two-acre lot without offending the sensibilities of my upscale neighbors....

| Hi Cindy and welcome. I too quite my job about 2 years ago although mine was for different reasons. I quit because I wanted to raise my babies, not someone else. DH and I both always had a parent at home growing up and I think it's so important. I have though taken advantage of it and do spend a lot of my time planning my garden and playing in the dirt. I don't understand how people cannot enjoy that, oh well. Again welcome!!! |

Yep, I'm green with envy! You quit your job, the very thing I dream of doing. Of course, I have one child in college, one still in high school, and a big house in town I need to sell. Maybe when some of these things change, my situation will change. Enough abou me! I'm so glad you're here. I'm fairly new, and there's a wealth of great ladies and wonderful information here. someone asked about my job - well i've been the assistant to the President at a private christian college in portland for the last 6 years and it has been wonderful but my boss resigned and my husband figured out how to have me at home again. i was home when the childern (now 25,22,20,16) were younger. with kids going to college, moving out, moving back in etc i need to get our home balanced again. it's not the haven i want it to be. i know i sounds like i'm living the dream and i really think i am but remember i've walked away from alot of financial freedom so that will be an adjustment but $$$ isn't everything. thanks for all the chicken websites i think their helpful and i also just received my Maryjane magazine the egg issue so i'm supper pumped to get going in this but i will have alot of plannig time. i love all the ladies that i've read so far - you're all girls after my own heart. talk to you all soon ~ blessings to you all.
