Wow! These posts are wonderful! I haven't gardened much (last year was my first serious garden) so I don't have any ideas to post, but I wanted to thank you all. I've written down all the ideas and I'm going to put them in the "Garden Gate" section of my sisterhood binder. Can't wait for spring!

I love this topic! I made a lady bug out of my dad's bowling ball. He passed away in 1997 and when I cleaned his house out, I found 9 bowling balls. I kept two of them because he had is name stamped into them. They were in my attic.
My husband painted them red and black with spray paint and filled the holes with some kind of paintable caulking and small gauge copper pipe topped with two wooden beads for antenna. They are adorable and a way to have my dad in the garden.
If I find a picture, I will try and post it.
I am trying to find something to do with an old metal Coleman cooler - the really old one that had a metal liner. It is rusty and we don't use it any more. I was thinking of just filling the bottom with rocks and putting dirt in to plant some wave petunias in it.

Alexis...I saw bowling balls made into a Lady Bug and a Honey Bee and I absolutely loved them!!!!!! Lucky you for being able to do a couple of them. How cool is that! And it does keep your dads spirit with you always.

Yahoo!!! Oh, am I happy to see this thread revive again!!! It has to be a sure sign that Spring will be coming soon! We are 8 degrees. Big snow storm news for the midwest into the East. Yup...winter has not gotten the hint yet, but we farm girls are getting the itch to get our trowels, spades and seeds so we can dig in the dirt! I am bound to have more little tinkle windchimes hanging in trees, so I can hear the breeze and not only feel it. I'm gonna plant showy nasturtiums so they will SHOUT their colors to the sky. Oh my! I NEED dirt so thqt I don't look at this foot of snow anymore! (ahem) Sorry that I was so excited...you may not be feeling frantic like me. ;0

Thanks Peg = it does keep his spirit close having his bowling balls in the yard. I wish I had kept all 9 of them. I am getting so many good ideas here. I can't wait for the snow to melt so we can get back out and garden.

HI Ruth,
I'll look through my photos and see if I can find one. I just loved it because it has my dad's name on it.
My daughter said we should one with mirrored paint - like a gazing ball. Havent tried taht yet.

All Great Ideas...except the Toilet with flowers. Don't like that or old car tires. A little too tacky for me! But I do love the bed frames, bath tubs, galvanized tubs, old boots, rain boots are cute too. The mail box in the garden sounds really sweet. I liked that one a lot! Keep those ideas coming girls! Love them!

I don't have bowling balls but my son helped a friend haul a truck load of old bowling pins to the juck yard, he was kind enough to bring a set of pins home for me. If I had a bowling ball I could set up a bowling lane in the flower garden. Gonna have to search the flea markets and yard sales this spring!

Kathy,
Put an ad on freecycle or craigslist in your area. I bet someone has old bowling balls. Maybe even the bowling alley. I can't find the pictures of my lady bug so I will take one when I get it out of the garden shed in the spring.
Wonder if you could paint them to match the lady bug or bee!
What kind of creature could you make? I think a butterfly would work with wire wings.

Thanks ladies, just one thing I've wanted to grow moss on him and have not yet been able to. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Yes, I tried the blender with moss and milk but it didn't work unless there is something else to it. Thanks.

For many years now I have used different things to decorate my gardens.....I am one that likes to hide little surprises such as a big seashell....a small fairy....so when someone comes by & looks they may see the surprise...One friend has to check every year cause I am always changing them or moving them or adding something different. I too have the bowling ball spray painted red & used as a globe of sorts in my front flower garden...I also use old antique ceiling light shades, the ones with at least 3 holes in them where they hung from a chain...those I use as birdbaths & sometimes feeders. If I have broken bowls or pots I use them for frog houses...I used a huge old wicker round basket up side down on a pole with wooden bowl bird feeders under it. I have even used old fish tank glass to make a fake river in my oriental garden that is really a animal cemetary, but no one ever knows that they just think its a garden. I grew up when in the south the old timers would cut the tires to look like flowers & white wash them so last year I got a few free tires from a neighbor & will be doing that this spring to have a bit of home with me. My grape arbor has a old metal boxsprings on the top of the frame to hold the grapes once they come in....I make those small bridges you see over water out of pallets to put in gardens...mine are strong enough to walk on but i put pots of flowers on it. I once made a fountain out of an old metal washtub that was really cute...I used bamboo for the spout & wrapped the tub in burlap...still have the tub...will come up with something else to do with it I am sure. I made a baby scarecrow this last fall using a old babies snowsuit for the body & a burlap coffee bag was cut into a fancy hat for it. It is now buried under 5 feet of snow so who knows if it will survive.....have a great week everyone...Michele'

What fun. You all have such great ideas.
Here's my old Maytag washer. Picture more herbs, and nasturtiums spilling out of the white enamel pot. They should be coming up any day!
Happy Spring! |

Here is an old clawfoot tub that I covered with broken pottery. Last year it had was filled with Kentucky pole beans using the wooden window frame as a trellis, with bright yellow and orange marigolds in front. I'm thinking of growing morning glories in it this spring. [IMG]http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/Snitz/Images/DSCN0410.JPG[/IMG
And I have to admit, I'm hankering for one of those old tire planters painted a cheery color and cut to look like a flower, but I can't find anyone who can turn the tire inside out. |

I love the bathtub. Our neighbors had one on the top of a hill. All you could see was the end of the tub and they had old boots hanging out the end with all these pretty blue and red flowers growing out of. Morning glories might be nice on the ladder I found out back.
I am thinking about painting it and maybe cutting it in half so it is like up one side and down the other.
