Would this work? Why can't I use the homemade powdered laundry soap in the automatic dishwasher?

Hi Oney,

I don't really know the answer to this question, but I'm guessing that the homemade detergent would bubble up too much and leak out of the dishwasher. Maybe some of the other girls will have a more definitive answer.

I think you would get too many bubbles. Bubbles can sneak through the seals in your dishwasher adn you will end up with a wet bubbly mess on your floor!

Maybe the borax and washing powder without the grated soap added. I bet the soap in it would make it leave a film on the dishes too. But maybe the borax and the washing soda alone. I say ...do a test run and let us know!

I have said before that I use a liquid soap from one of the companies that I sell. It is just liquid and the one I use is Sunshine Concentrate from Nature's Sunshine but similar products are available from Shaklee, Amway, and Miracle II. Probably far more than that. But you can fill your little soap cup with baking soda and then add 6-8 drops of this soap and a few essential oil drops- citrus I would say, and it will wash fine.

I know this is not what you are using but maybe you could use it to adapt to your program.

I tried my homemade laundry soap in the dishwasher and got lots of bubbles!!! I just poured in some vinegar and they disappeared instantly. Then I made up the laundry soap with out the soap, just borax, washing soda, baking soda and it works perfectly.

How much and do you have hard or soft water ect. I tried a homemade dishwasher soap once and it left a film on the dishes even after adding vinegar to the machine but we have very hard water.

The only problem is that sometimes people get a white scum on their dishes if they have hard water. If you want to make your own homemade dishwasher soap, make sure you add in Citric Acid. It cuts that scum and your dishes will shine! I'll try to did up my recipe (haven't had a dishwasher except my own two hands for a while!)

Here is the recipe I use, and I love it.
1 Cup Borax
1 Cup Baking Soda
3 Tablespoons citric acid
Just add enough of this mixture to your dispenser, and fill the rinse with white vinegar.
Dishes will be squeeky clean.

I tried other home made dishwasher soap and had problems with white film. This recipe however, really cleans them nice, and little or no white film. We do have hardwater. This recipe came from one of the farmgirls on the farmgirl connection.

Sheri, thanks so much for posting the recipe...can you tell me how the citric acid is sold, is it liquid, etc. & where to buy? I absolutely love the idea of the white vinegar in the rinse agent. Do you fill it every wash, or does it stay in the dispenser like the other rinse agents? Very cool info!
