Okay, girls...we've all got them - family members with weird names. Here's a few of mine:
*Arvle
*Jewell Juanita
*Thecla
*Hansel
*Lotis and Otis (no joke...my distant twin cousins)
*Birdie Mae
*Absalom
*Sigismund
*Scholastica
*Ursus
*Elisha
Do most of you have weird names in your family, or do I have more than the average?

I'm going to say that Scholastica is up there on the "severely weird list", Jessie!

We don't have many...I'm probably the weirdest with a boy's name being a girl. On my husband's side, they have Aloysius as a favorite name for the boys. My husband is a 4th generation...we were going to use it too, if Violet Mae had been a boy. Those Irish and their Saints!!

We had:
Sylvester
Teague
Theodocia

That's about as strange as I can come up with.

I find it funny that you put Elisha. I know at least 5 people with that name!

I have twin great uncles named Myrl and Eyrl.

My sisters kids are Silas Garamond and Salem Rockwell. Garamond and Rockwell are font names. Her husband is a graphic designer.

It's sort of funny...you can tell who belongs to which side of my family. Mama's family are all southern "long-timers" (our family was here prior to the Revolutionary War), and Daddy's family are more recently arrived from Germany and Switzerland.

Julie, I can't believe you know people named Elisha. Elisha is my great-great-great-great-grandfather's name. There's a book about him, "Elisha Wallen: The Longhunter" or something like that. They have a festival about him in Cumberland Gap, Missouri, too. He was a contemporary of Daniel Boone.

Hmmm... We have the total hillbilly names in my family. I always joke that if you're from West Virginia, ya gotta nickname. Sad thing is, I have no idea if these are their real names or the nickname!

*Punkin
*Cletis
*Sonny
*Bud
*Frankie (aunt)
*Totie
*Boots
*Missie (that's me...)
*Rowena
and as soon as I check the "tree" I'll give ya some more...

Elisha is a name that's coming back. Though, Julie, I LOVE the names of those kids. Adorable and very creative!

I traced my Great Grandmother Theodocia's family back to Scotland in 1554, and Teague was a family name, passed down to generations of men in her family. Their surname was Wray, but after 100 years or so here, by 1680, they changed the spelling to Ray.

My good friend, Kristin's great-great grandmother's name was Cuba-Haiti! Her father was an explorer, and he spent a great deal of time in South America and was so in love with the culture and he couldn't decide between the two names so he did both!

Jonnie, you aren't alone with your "boy's name". My mama is Johnny Ruth because she's the 2nd born and my Pawpaw was hoping for a boy after his firstborn was a girl. His name was Johnny, too. At least your's isn't spelled like a boy's!

We have some pretty different one's, too, well, besides my own being Cherry Dawn. My grandmother is Ila Augustine. My granddaddy was Talmadge Tadie that he later changed to Talmadge Teddy. He named my daddy Patrick Teddy who in turn named my baby brother Bryan Teddy. I was really hoping my brother would continue that tradition with his baby boy, but he named him Braden Patrick. Seems my SIL didn't care for "Teddy".

I have an aunt Tootie and an aunt Joicilyn. I had an aunt Eura and uncle Darb. Have an uncle Dub. Some of my cousins are Apple, Davonna, Clarissa, Camille, and Durell. Had a great-great uncle named Snow Fields and he was married to Etta. They were known to me as Uncle and Mimmie. They raised my mama and were like my grandparents. I also had a great-aunt named Sherby. And there are more tickling my brain that I can't remember right now. I'll have to come back to this after I talk to Mama. I love "vintage" names!

Great names!!! Anyone looking to name a little one something different (and traditional) should look here!!!

I forgot that my Great Aunt was Rozella, her mother, Roma.

My father's middle name was Dorby, and he hated that as much as the day is long, so he always said he didn't have a middle name, just initial "D". I was always suspect until one day I found his Social Security card and called him on it!!!

Jessie May every time I say your name I am reminded of the movie
A Trip to Bountiful...have you seen it?

I have a few names to add to your list....how about
Maynard (uncle)
Florence Ruby (mother)

I laughed and laughed at your list....

Oh I just thought of another one Bruce has a sister whose nickname is Tut Tus...her real name is Karen. Go figure.

Well, we have a few doozers in my family. I have a family tree book, it is very old, and the brothers Peleg and Ppreserved are kind of at the top of the list. Of course there was the poor young woman called Submit. That has to be the worst ever.On my husbands side of the family we have Carwil, Loyce, Blondell, Eudora, Fredda, just to nae a few. It is still raining here, the last 27 out of the last 29 days we have had rain. I'm thinking of changing my name to Swampy ...

Okay..
My mom's name is Anda,
My grandpa is Averill (a few grandkids and great grandkids..including one of my boys..has this for their middle name,
Cletis,
Lois and Clois (twins)
Dovey
Texie
Houston
Nola (I love this one!)
Elsie
Ervin
Chock (seriously!)
Arnel
There are a ton of funny names further back....one line of my mom's side of the family..my great grandpa's side...has 18 kids and most of them have names like George Washington Turner, Benjamin Franklin Turner, Dolly Madison,James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson and so on. It was funny, in that family...every once it awhile there would be a child named a simple name with no middle name in the middle of all the patriotic sort of names...my great grandpa is named Ervin and he is one of the 18.

Dovey is one of my favorites...if I ever have a gray colored girl critter I will likely use that one.

Jenny I like Nola! Very pretty sounding..

I guess our youngest has a wierd name, most people think so.. Payne. IT's an old family name on my husband's side. Used to be a madien name way back and then people started using it as a first name. It was Hubs grandpa's middle name and there is an uncle of his alive now named Payne.

For this next baby we have either Sheldon or Cora Rose picked, both family names.
My Grandpa's name is Darwin (also our Payne's middle name) and he had bros named Orland, Rexford but I know him as Rex, and Burlan. Those are the different names..

My Grnadma's brother is Sheldon.
Most of the families have pretty standard names.. Tom, Mary, Helen, Betty, Ralph, When we were looking for family names we had to do some digging to find unuaual names!

One I find funny is my aunt and uncle. They had 3 boys and their middle names are all Dean. That's a fam. name for them and if this baby is a boy it will be Sheldon Dean, a fam. name for my hubs family too.

Elise, when is your baby due? We are due November 07 and I guess our baby will either be Eden or Havilah. I would say it's a pretty close toss up.
The weirdest names on our family tree....
Myrtle Ivadine
Simeon Micuneus
Lut (short for Luther)
My son is Titus and got a lot of raised eyebrows....I suspect either of the girl names we have will also get some fun comments!!!

I have a friend that named her two children:
Anna Bob and Hannah Bob.
Beautiful little girls, too.

Anna Bob and Hannah Bob..that is a crack up!!
My grandpa on my dad's side's middle name was Emily!! His mom wanted a girl..so she named him Earl Emily! wow, huh? Oh...and his mother's maiden name was Mae West!

I was just thinking of my ex husband's family....I don't do that very often (for obvious reasons ) but they were a large, appalachian family and boy howdy did they have some names!

My ex-fil's name was Freeland
He had brother's named Garland, Marion, and Darby.

My ex's grandmother was named Beulah Belle.

*** Misty! I love the name Havilah...I went to school with a beautiful Israeli girl named Havilah. So pretty--she had the most amazing curls I'd ever seen!

I like the use of surnames for first names or middle names. My friend, Julie, named her sons Tate McHewen (her mother's maiden name) and Thomas Clayton (her grandmother's maiden name).
