This weekend is Mom & me weekend at Girl Scout camp. It brings out seasoned campers as well as first timers. I'm a hostess at the wall tents! \o/ My girls & I cannot wait! The camp keeper just got done putting screens up on the tents so we'll be spoiled this year with the modern addition. I won't miss the mosquitoes.
We're introducing the girls & Mom to camp life with a scavenger hunt. They visit each location and paint a nail to show they've followed the hunt correctly. Afterwards they'll have a cool manicure to show off. :o)
Friday night is our much loved owl call. Our camp is filled with great horned owls as well as barred owls. If the girls are quiet they sometimes do call back. But mostly we hear them late at night while lying in bed. I do love that sound. We have to remind the girls it's not a sound to be afraid of.
Saturday after breakfast we have another great adventure - the creek hike. I've heard that the creek is high because of all the rain we've had. It might be a creek swim. Last year I had a mom in my group who had never camped nor walked a creek before. That was an adventure for me. She complained the entire way - I just reminded her that she was creating great memories for her daughter (who was having a grand time) that she ought to set a good example!
We have crafts planned, campfires and other activities for the weekend. of course lots of s'mores will be eaten!
I can't wait! I better get the truck packed. I don't know why, but it always amazes me when I meet people who don't get outdoors. But I try to encourage these Mom's who do come out to camp with their daughters. This might be the only nature they experience. They need more of it.

Oh how I miss those days. I took my girls to seniors in Girls Scouts and we had a great time doing all kinds of stuff. I really think it is a great learning tool for both the girls and their moms.

Well, we survived camp. I had 26 other campers in my care. Everyone arrived Friday night. After orientation of the camp we all met at the corral to meet with other campers then settled into our camp for a fire & s'mores. Yummy! Around midnight I had to ask a tent full of 6 year olds to pipe down because others were trying to sleep. Told them they'd be able to hear the owls if they were quiet. Not sure if their Mom's appreciated it or not - but the other Mom's sure did! I awoke to the sounds of coyotes around 2am. Love that sound. Didn't tell the little ones about that.
Saturday was filled with food, creek walk, swimming, crafts and a storm! I had run back to our wall tents to secure everything when another hostess came to tell me that all tenters & cabin people were being evacuated to the main lodge. After I secured the tents my girls came running through the forest to find me! Oh, my! They helped to secure the area and we headed to the lodge where we all enjoyed games, songs and painting nails. We had some really little campers this year so we tried our hardest to keep them calm. There were high winds, lots of thunder & lightening too. A couple of Mom's decided to pull out and haul it home. I really hated to see them go - with it being their girls first time camping and all.
We were given the all clear around 10pm to head back to camp. Opened up our tent walls and what a glorious night it was! A light rain and wonder breeze through the tents. I love the sound of rain on the tents at night!
Sunday morning we enjoyed breakfast together. My girls & I did a bit of letterboxing at camp. Then headed home.

SOUNDS absolutly WONDERFUL! I remember all my days at GS camp... Did the Tripper thing...the CIT thing...and even worked in the kitchen for part of the summer after just so I could stay at camp. Then I became a counselor. Did Arts-n-Crafts! Then I landing in upstate NY as the AC Director and turned out to be the Assist Camp Director cause at 28 I was the next oldest person in camp besides her!!!! Lived on an island for that one. One of the first great camps of the Adirondaks. We were a "water" camp (of course) so our uniforms were blue and white instead of green/white. Those were some great times!!! I love those old wall tents. I don't think our "walls" were ever down except in the big windy rains... No netting either...you were living high on the hog!
Too bad your Moms bailed on you. After every storm there's a rainbow! Clothes dry and a campfire makes you warm. Nothing better than campfire stew and smores when you are cold and damp! |
