...on Route 66.
Now that we have the trailer, we are considering doing Route 66 nest year.
Any farmgirls who have done this or live near the route, I would love suggestions about things that I should Not Miss!
I'll start a folder and keep all the tips there until we are ready to do it

Oh, Michele! What a fun thing to do! I have never been on Route 66 and don't live on it, either, so I am absolutely no help to you whatsoever. HA! But I did find this blog http://rwarn17588.wordpress.com/ It looks like they know a lot about it and have a bunch of inside information. I hope that you will share the best stuff with us! You know that the kitschy-er the better!

I live a few blocks from the route in Chicago. http://www.legendsofamerica.com/IL-Chicago.html If you head down through Wilmington (watch for the Gemini Giant) the Kankakee State Park is not too far from the route. We camp there.
My Gram lived near the end of the Route in California. Near Victorville. There is a home out there with bottle sculptures in the yard. HUGE, been there for ages. I'll see if I can find the link.

Michele, you have given me a great idea! My mom has been saying recently that she wants to go to the Grand Canyon, and I have not been enthusiastic about the prospect because, dang, THAT is a long drive from here and I don't want to fly. But when I looked at Route 66, guess where it goes near? The Grand Canyon!
So we are talking about planning a trip for next year and following Route 66 from Tulsa to the Grand Canyon and planning to drive a little bit and then stop at cool places along the way and just meandering to and from it over the course of two weeks. Now this is the kind of thing that I can get excited about! It would be cool to see you out there!

Michele, that would be so fun to sleep in such a kitschy place! That is exactly the sort of thing that comes to my mind when I think of Route 66. Retro cowboys, atomic clocks and pink and turquoise boomerangs.

Hey, Michele! I got some cool books from the library about Route 66! Last night I flipped through "Legendary Route 66 - A Journey Through Time Along America's Mother Road" by Michael Karl Witzel and Gyvel Young-Witzel. It has a lot about the history of Route 66 and tons of photos. You know, I love to look at the photos! Very inspiring!

| Route 66...hmmmmm...what a great idea! Well, Michele, I abandoned my ideas of a vintage trailer in lieu of a MOTORCYLCE!!! Got myself a vintage Magna V30! (Hubby has the V65) Summer after next we are headed for Yellowstone! So, I'll expect a full report on your summer on Route 66 cause if I get good....perhaps the Grand Canyon could be on the list. |

Flagstaff, Arizona is on Route 66 . . .and yes, that is near the Grand Canyon . . . but the South Rim. The North Rim is quite a bit farther away. Depending on if you just want to go to the edge and look over or do some hiking . . . but the Grand Canyon is HUGE!!!! Just stopping and looking at some of the view points (SPECTACULAR!!!) along the South Rim . . . checking out shops, etc. Well, that will take AT LEAST A FULL DAY . . . There are campgrounds and other lodging there. If you want to hike and you have a doggie, you won't be able to take the dog on the trails (there is a kennel there as well).

I live about 30 minutes from Joplin, MO which somehow managed to make it into the song. I dont think that is even close to on your way, but if anyone decides to swing through this area let me know!

| I was the presenter for a week at a conference in Flagstaff! Had a GREAT time. Also did a uber-quick tour the Grand Canyon vistas while I was there. (and I mean UBER-quick) Brought home a couple of cool route 66 trinkets... But I think traveling the whole thing would be neato! |

i live right near the end of it. well, los angeles. it just looks like anywhere else in LA once you enter the county. BUT, well down here Foothill Blvd is route 66, but i'm not sure if the route officially ends in LA or SanBernardino, which is east by about 60 miles.
anyways, you should end your trip with the LA Count fair. It's HUGE! Plus, you might be able to catch a concert of someone you like there. I'm not sure about the fair program for next year, but this year it starts LAbor day weekend and goes, I think, for the whole month of Sept. I know it is at least 3 weeks. And the fair is located on the north east end of the county, in Pomona, CA. Which, if you don't want to go too far into LA County, it works out well.
Oh I envy you, I always wanted to take that trip. and I LOVE the song. I traveled 40 miles of Route 66 for four years traveling to work and back every day. I drove from the victorvalley down into SanBernardino County through the Cajon Pass. I was working there during 2003 and all the crazy fires we had her in southern california. I drove my little car with flames in the middle of freeway (like between the fast lanes of the on-coming traffic). Flames that were leaping quite high, I'd say some were reaching 8ft or so, this fire was like 5 ft from my car! so scary! and so hot. And then, a few years later, I got to see a small plane dump the fire retardant onto a fire in the pass. It was so epic.
I'm not trying to scare you at all. I just love, love LOVE that stretch of the 66. It's so pretty and wild, which is hard to come by here in So.Cal.
I know you'll have fun. And check out the LA fair, it might be a really fun way to end your way down Route 66. And it's such an american thing, a county fair. How better to cap your trip!

oh and if you'd like to camp somewhere nice, that's right off Route 66 in southern california, you can try silverwood lake. And on your way toward the fair grounds there are ski lifts at Mt Baldy, which is also right off Route 66, which run all year and are a fun little scenic thing to do in the summer or you can ski in the winter! there are also some fun hiking trails in Mt Baldy, one with a water fall!

i wish i'd seen this post earlier! it's also one of my dreams to travel the whole of route 66! i grew up in kingman, az (which is of course on the route, is even in the song!) and it is part of my childhood. i grew up doing the "route 66 fun run" each year, a huge car show that travels from seligman, az to kingman, az each april or may along the route. also if you are looking for fun places to eat, try Mr. D'z in kingman (oprah did a spot on her show about it! it has famous homemade root beer) or the snow cap in seligman...

in San Bernardino starting at 6pm to night they are doing the Route 66 Rondevou... I'm a terrible speller. BUT. It starts to night. I'm thinking of going with my fam. My dad used an old 57 Chevy Bel Air as has commuter car in the 80's, which was silly because he spent those few years under the hood of that car. But the festival will be completely full of classic cars. You local So. Cal. Farmgils should check it out!
