Hi, I'm Shari, and I just joined! Perhaps someone can help me with this. My friend Neeta gave me what appears to be a crochet or lace making tool that is a silver dollar sized ring, and a small 6 inch bar with a ball threaded onto each end. I can't figure out how it works! Does anyone know what this thing is?

Hey Shari,

I've been crocheting for 17 years and have not seen a tool of this sort. There is another member named Sunshine that very well may know what this though..maybe she'll see your post and leave a reply.

Have a great day,
Stephanie

I am thinking it is more like a shawl pin. You know the thing we use instead of a button. I have someting similar to that but in a bone ring and then the ball unscrews on one end. What you do is put the circle down first then you unscrew on ball pin it inside the circle then put the ball back on. Keeps the circle in place along with your shawl.

That would be my guess....

The shawl clasp sounds good, but there is no pin at the end, just blunt threaded ends. And there is a whole string of lace still attached to it, someone made it with that thing!

please post a picture a little farther away and one this same distance but a little better focus hard to tell in the photo sorry I need to see what the lace looks like to see if it is being used as a crochet tool or a netting tool or a tatting tool. Also does the ring open up does the metal pin come apart take a picture of both of those if it does these things

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

here is the original picture she posted
sorry she deleted the photo so it won't post here as the link is broken

to post an image place this at the beginning [ img ] and this at the the end [ /img ] minus the spaces I put inside the brakes but leave the brackets. I had to add the two spaces so you could see what I was showing and this between (meaning your photo information your was this next thing listed ) http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee155/Jagsback/002.jpg and the image will show up here

Thanks Sunshine, I'll get more pics up tomorrow sometime. I've got a couple of events now and in the morning, but after that they'll be up. And no, the ring does not open, and other than the balls unscrewing, the bar does nothing else. I'll see if I can make the lace look more clear. I appreciate your help!

Could it have been used as a belt, with the bar and ring serving as a buckle? It seems to be two rows of double or triple crochet, which might have been hand sewn to the ring but is now coming apart.

I don't see how they could be crochet tools. They remind me of hardware for wall hangings.

everything looks like a toggle ( belt buckle) or shall pin to me nothing about this looks like any crochet tatting or netting tool I have seen and I have seen a lot of them as I collect them. I wanted better pictures to make sure first. Did the person who gave them to you claim they had seen them used as lace making tools or had they just been told that. Looks like crochet hanging from it but it doesn't look like these items made the lace. sorry if this isn't the answer you wanted to hear

It looks like to what they call hair pin lace.
it has crocheted bar like pattern.
Maybe this is an older version of that.
I think some how you lay the circle flat and crochet from one side to the other.
You might could do some research on the internet.
good luck.

Well, my friend Neeta owns a restaurant, and one of her customers gave it to her, with a spool of the same yarn still also attached. We both assumed she'd used those tools, since the yarn is attached to the ring. Who knows. Thanks all for at least looking at it. Maybe the mystery will reveal itself one day. I'll keep you posted!

hair pin lace is made on a fork not a ring normally but I guess it could be. Hair pin lace gets its name from people using actual hairpins to make the lace which are fork shaped

Now I see! The person was making a belt! The belt was going to be crocheted or sewn right on it.

Fascinating topic...this was fun...now on to the next adventure. :-)

Other than Erie and Philly, it's all mountains, so every trip takes longer. I'm an hour and a half from State College or Altoona. I have to drive fifteen miles for a spool of thread.
