I keep reading about people who like using Firefox so much better than Internet Explorer so yesterday I downloaded it and am just starting to use it. I know that I have more to do in terms of getting it set up the way I want it, but what makes it better in your opinion? Or is it better? So far I haven't found any huge benefits to using it over IE, but I haven't done too much with it yet. I have heard it has better security, faster loading, etc.
Anyone have a preference for one over the other that they care to share? |

I've had Firefox for over a year. My son insisted after we had a major computer malfunction in January 2008 due in large part to(as I understand it)an innate problem within the IE-Windows operating system. Don't ask me to explain more than that because I really don't understand it. We use it for security reasons. It's not faster. In fact, I think it's slower.

I use Firefox too. We have a iMac and Firefox works much better on it then any of the other browsers. It can be slow and a bit frustrating at times but we don't really have a choice. Good luck on getting yours set up they way you like.

I was told by someone who is an IT specialist, security and all that to switch. I love it. There are a few sites where it doesn't work well but I really haven't had any issues.

I have used Foxfire for about 5 years now. My son also suggested that we use this browser as he is in the IT business. He stated to me that they have a more secure system. Foxfire is always updating the security of their system. The only drawback is if the site I am using does no confirm or isn't setup to Foxfire requirements. Sometimes a simple patch is all it takes.

My brother in law runs the computer systems for the college at Whitman and he says that Foxfire is better because most of the "cyber attacks" are on windows programs ie: Explorer. I have been using it now for 5 years and have had no more "crashing" problems. There so far has only been one site that I have had trouble with. I have been really happy with it. I also use Thunderbird as my mail program instead of Outlook. |

My one son is a musician, so he has a couple websites that he uses, and he was the one who told me to switch to Firefox. I am about the last person in the world who is computer savvy, but I do know that firefox seems to run better than the windows I used to use.
I have been pretty happy with the fact that even tho my computer is 10 years old, firefox downloads really fast. So, my figuring is, if this old dinosaur can pop into cyber land in an instant, then anybody can get online really fast!! Plus, yes, they do have upgrades quite often, so that's a big relief!

No we don't have dial up...DSL and it's fast. It just seems to me that things are slower since we've changed to Firefox. Maybe I'm wrong. We are very happy with the security and have had no problems at all since switching.

We used firefox when we had a pc. Our computer became totally unusable within a week of getting home internet, using IE. It was overloaded with spamware and spyware, which apparently firefox is better at blocking. A computer tech at my college told me how to remove the spyware, and he recommended switching to firefox, along with running a spyware removal program regularly, to prevent the problem from getting so bad again.

Well, I guess I am sold on Firefox. I have used it for the last couple days and yes, it is a bit slower than IE, but not enough to really affect me. I do like the tabs better than what I had on IE, but it seems the biggest advantage is the one that you don't necessarily notice- security. So, Firefox it will be! Thanks so much for your responses! Now to go through some more of the apps and see what I might like to add.... |

I use Firefox when my children are playing a game on the internet (disney, pbskids, etc.) The games seem to play faster and better on firefox. That's my experience so far.

We use firefox. My husband is a computer guy and it is all we are allowed to have. We have cable internet and it is fast. My kids do some gaming and they love it because it is so fast. My daughter is a web-designer and it runs her stuff really fast too. My husband says it is the security that he likes about it. I have never found a site where it won't work. We have used it since just after Y2K. We sometimes have 5 computers pulling from the wireless and you can't tell someone else is on. My Mom's internet slows down the more users are on it.

I use both Firefox and IE8 depending on what I'm viewing.

What I like about it, is my daughter has often closed one of my windows that I was trying to get something off of or what have you, and I may not remember how I got to that site.....yet....I can bring it right back up with the history! Much better then IE.
Also I love the tabs. There is a few sites I visit every day, so I can leave those tabs on all the time. When I restart my pc, and restart firefox, I don't have to find them again, they are already up and ready! You can't do that with IE. Also another great thing, is if something happens to your power, and with IE you would lose every thing you were doing on that site and even the site and have to start over, but with FF, just turn your pc back on and reload FF and there every thing is waiting for you!

There is a new Firefox that doesn't leave a history behind either. I just downloaded it but it doesn't save cookies and I have to enter info each time. But I still have the regular Firefox if I'm in a hurry and don't care if anyone notices or not.
Also, Opera is a secure browser, supposedly more so than Firefox. I used it for a bit but it's a little too advanced for me with all the widgets. One widget said that Opera didn't have any holes, Firefox had 1 hole and IE had 9 holes. I got a notice that FF had fixed their hole. I don't use IE at all. It's on my laptop but I don't use it.
Will stick with FF.
