My friends that have the horse ranch that I am helping watch have a mare that we have thought was going to foal the last 2 days running. Tonight she is showing even more signs, so we are up every 15 minutes all night long to check to see if she is foaling via closed circuit cameras. Anyone want to stay up and watch with me?

I am about to go check on her...

No labor yet, the mare has stopped eating (she has been a bit off her feed for the past 2 days which can be a sign of labor, however they have had mares eat while foaling so...)and is resting near her stall door. No signs of distress so I think we have some time yet...So exciting!

Oh, Alee, I have horses and they have babies almost every year and I have yet to see it. I swear thay will cross their legs to keep from doing it if they know you are watching. She will have it right after you fall asleep. Or nights later when you figure you must have miscalculated it. At least that is the way these of mine do. Mine have shelters but are pasture kept and they will go to the furtherest place to have their babies. We had such a cutie born on Mothers Day.

Hi LaVonna!

That is great that your mares foal out so easily. They had a mare die last year due to foaling difficulties so they are being super careful with this one. She is extra special to the ranch owner. She is a good and gentle mother too. I can't wait to assist. We also try to imprint the little ones at birth if at all possible. It makes life easier on us all as they are show horses so they get groomed and clipped a lot.

What type of horses do you have? These are Straight Egyptian Arabians. This mare that is foaling is only Egyptian Related though.

Well I just checked on her. She has changed positions and so has the foal he/she is really weighing heavy on his/her mom. I can tell Binty is very uncomfortable. For a second there I thought she was going to lay down and start pushing. Hopefully soon!

No Foal yet. She got up and down several times in the night and looked like she was going to push. Now she is standing and lazing around her stall. So we'll see! We might get a daytime baby!

OK, I checked back to see if it came. We actually have a back forty acres and that is usually where ours go. Talk about not a good idea! cayotes and wild hogs to kill a baby. The one born on Mothers Day was born down there. It was a first time mom and we did not know she was expecting. My nephew carried the baby up to the pasture that is by the house. He goes down twice a day to check on the ones in the bigger acerage. We do always bring the foals up to an area by one of the houses as the great pyrenees guard that area.

That is great that that baby didn't get eaten! That is always a concern! No foal yet! She's still teasing us.

Oh false alarm... The speakers on the web cam aren't the greatest and I think the gal who is cleaning stalls today was running water into a bucket.

Still waiting. I am going to take a nap this afternoon just in case I have to stay up on foal watch again today

Still no foal. I just gave her a nice bath and let her graze on green grass for a while. Lets keep our fingers crossed that she foals before evening!

Well, I checked in again. This is totally how it goes at my place. When you think about she might be smart to hold off. She has it pretty good a Alee's Spa. bath, brushing, massage...

All kidding aside, I think babies come when they are ready. This one will too. We have never lost a mom and never lost a foal. Are these full size horses or minis?

Hi LaVonna-

They are full size horses- Straight Egyptian Arabians.

She is way soft in the hind quarters and her vulva has been very moist. We don't think her water has broken quite yet. She has been off her feed for the past few days- normally she is a greedy gut, and she is going past due now, so any moment! We are officially on the night time every 20 minutes watch now.

Still no foal. Binty was shifting around just a minute ago and I thought she might start getting down to business, but it looks like she is just settling in for another nap! I have an alarm on my computer set to go off very 30 minutes. I'll try to check in as often as I am awake enough to do so!

Oh LaVonna- the foal that killed her mother during foaling was breech and upside down. Her hooves went right through the uterine wall. It looked like she was prolapsing her uterus, but it was actually her intestines bulging out through her vulva. It was really sad. They lost both the mare and the foal.

Anyway- Binty is still doing great, but hopefully we will have some good news soon!

How exciting Alee! I hope Binty and babe have an easy time with birthing. She will probably drop that foal the minute you drift off...they always seem to on me at least. We are expecting a half Frisian foal next month at the farm here, so I will eventually be on foal watch too, not my horse, sadly, but exciting still. Good luck and keep us posted, I can't wait for pics!

Still no foal. She is looking pretty miserable though. Stay tuned! She is at 328 days. She usually foals between 325 and 330!

I bet you are getting tired Allee. I know I did when we were on foal watch. We had all our babies within about 2 wks of each other. Glad to get it all done at once.
Hope she is okay with not eating. Mine have never done that before. One mare actually ate breakfast and before she was done she laid down and had her baby.
Keep us posted!

Hi Jennifer- She has been eating- just not like she normally does. We feed 3-4 times a day to keep hay in front of the horses at all times. Lately she has been eating only about 2 flakes of hay a day plus about 4 pounds of grain (Strategy brand). She is looking good. her coat is glossy and she has great body condition. I think she is just very uncomfortable.

Oh and no foal yet. Hopefully soon! She is so soft in the rear that we are joking that the foal could just slip out with no effort.

Baby is taking up a lot of room, she likely feels full enough already with out eating a lot, poor girl!
You about to go on evening watch Alee? I've been on baby watch for a while with all of the sheep and goats =) I usually take the late evening watch, since I'm up anyway til after midnight.
Glad to hear she is eating a bit tho'
Waves hi over the hill to Alee!
Hoping for a foal tonight!
