I have a 3yr old boy, 2 yr old boy and 1 yr old girl. I just started chore charts for the boys. I have 3 chores for the 3 yr old; Make bed/Sweep Stairs/Clean around Hamster cage. For the 2 yr old Make bed/Dust piano.
Any suggestions of other things little ones can help with? I would like to give their charts variety so they don't get to bored!!! |

What I have for my kids (and it has worked since they were very small) is a pegboard with 4 chores listed ..one above each peg...Pet helper, bathroom helper, trash helper, and kitchen helper. Each child has a little tag with their name on it and each saturday the tags get moved to the right..and the last one back to the first spot. I tried changing it every day..that never worked. This way they get a chore for a week...and then get to change...so if they really truly hate a chore, they know there is an end in sight. As the years have gone by,each chore is a little harder...for instance...pet helper used to mean just feeding the cats and dogs..then it meant helping with the chickens and gathering eggs too, and now it includes straightening the mud room. My youngest three are 12 now and I have a 14 year old at home too. It works really well for us.
There are alot of chores little kids can do.

My 3 (almost 4 year old) is now helping to put folded laundry into the appropriate drawers in his dresser. The kids love to help vaccuum, though I typically have to go over it myself. And they help with feeding the animals and keeping their things picked up.

When my kids were littler bathroom helper just cleaned the sink and picked up dirty clothes (thankfully it means alot more now) kitchen helper just was the fun one and meant helping with cooking, now it means setting the table and sweeping the floor and sometimes even dishes. Trash helper meant putting things into the trash for me when they were little..now it means taking out the trash, being in charge of trash (and compostables) and all that goes with that and more. Sweeping porches is something little kids love to do..I had small brooms for my kids when they were small. Wiping off the table after it is cleared (standing on a chair) is another one they really like.

| Oh I like that idea Jenny! My 3 year old has his own little broom that he is very proud of! I guess I've gotten so used to doing it all myself it's hard for me to thing of things I think they can help with! |

It is alot easier to do the chores ourselves for sure. I have to constantly "rein myself in" on that even now. My youngest daughter takes FOREVER to load the dishes into the dishwasher..something I could do in no time..but it is a good idea for us to let them do it..they really do learn. I have dealt with kids (foster kids and at work) who have never had any responsibilites at all..it is just sad. We really are doing them alot of good letting them help! Your 3 year old will get a big boost of self esteem having a job all his own too!

So since we're on the topic of chores... Does anyone have any ideas about how much or even at all to have step children do when they visit? I have a nine year old step daughter who does very little for herself when she is with her mom which is nearly all the time. We have her for 4 weeks throughout the summer 1 week on and then 3 weeks off (weird I know). My boys (7 and almost 4) have chores around the house. How much should we ask of our step daughter? I don't think its fair to my boys that she does nothing since then it looks like she is spoiled, but she also hasn't been ever taught simple chores and since she isn't here most of the time, maybe it looks like we're punishing her? I don't know. Any thoughts?
