Saturday I worked with my DD's friend who has a cleaning business. We cleaned a new house ready to sell up on Signal Mt. It was huge. She had me start out cleaning baseboards. Ok, that bout did me in for sure. Then the doors were all of 10' high and they had to be wiped down, too. So here I was going from all bent over to reaching up high and climbing ladders. I got my workout yesterday for sure. It was so hot, too. We got that house done then went to some new condos in downtown Chattanooga. Did 2 of those and it was really hot by then.
I told the girl I could work a couple days a week but I'm too old to be doing all that. I don't know if it's even worth the drive to get to the jobs since they are in Chatt. But I need to do something. And maybe I can lose some weight doing this. I've done this before for my preacher who had a cleaning business but I worked by myself. These people are all younger and listen to blaring rap type music. Not for me.
Does anyone else do this for a living? There is good money in it but lots of work.

Hi Kris! I do this kind of work. I usually work alone, but evey now and then when I have a bigger home to clean I have a friend who works with me. I probably don't make as much as the other cleaning crews around here, but that's by choice. I started my cleaning service so I wouldn't have to work so much and have more time with my family. I have jobs that are a breeze but then there's others that leave body asking why I ever went into this work. But in the end I find it very rewarding.

I was thinking yesterday as we were leaving for the day that I do not want to do any more of this. I was very sore and tired. My hands hurt worse though. I thought my back would be hurting but it's ok. So I think I might could do some more. Not every day, though. I'd get burned out really quick. But it is good work and is good for the body. And nice to be able to work when I want, too. And I love how the places look when we leave. Such a mess when we get there and all sparkly clean when we leave.
The only thing I did not like , weell, other than the hard back breaking labor, is all the chemical cleaners she uses. I was coughing bad for awhile using the tile cleaner. I am so used to just cleaning with baking soda and vinegar. So all the fumes were a bit too much. I wonder if I should wear a mask?

Kristin, you could possibly suggest she try using your cleaners. They may be less expensive and do the jog as well. I'm sorry to hear you were having breathing problems. I can justly understand why.

I used to do cleaning also. My business was called Peachy Kleen. LOL. It is the hardest work ever, i did mostly apt turnovers. Those college kids are slobs. Not all of them are like the farmgirls here.

You are so right Kris! Those chemical cleaners can be hard on your lungs and your skin. I use "green" cleaners when I can. To be honest some of them just are not tough enough to cut through the scum of some places. But I have some folks I clean for on a regular basis so the I can use the "better for me cleaners". I have experimented with different chemical cleaners till I have found some I can use that do not seem to irritate my lungs. Tile Cleaner was one of the worst for me. If you can't get vinegar water or baking soda to take off the soap scum, I would suggest maybe trying The Works Tub and Tile Cleaner. It is the only chemical cleaner I have found that does not irritate my lungs and does a very good job at removing hard water stains. I tried to wear a mask while cleaning but the work is just so hot, I found it really hard to breathe with a mask on. But it would defiantely be a safer way to clean with harsh chemicals. And don't forget your gloves! They don't just protect you from nasty germs but the chemicals too. :)

It does seem like you have to use those tougher chemical cleaners on commercial jobs, especially where there are alot of men around. But at homes it would seem like they'd want a less harsh cleanser. But alot of people just aren't up on all that. I did notice my hands were very dry after all the Pine-sol water washing. Amd the other stuff is alot cheaper, too.
