While we are still on daylight savings time, when I'm getting up at my usual 5:45am time, it is still completely dark outside and I've enjoyed going out and viewing the stars; however, other than being able to identify the big dipper, I know nothing about it.

Does anyone here have a telescope and use it to look at the constellations and star gaze? If so, what type do you recommend just for casual viewing? What are some good reference materials for the novice?

Y'all know me... eternally curious and learning!

Clare,
I don't have a telescope but I have a book that has helped me to figure out what I am looking at. I got it a long time ago and do not know if it is still in print but it is entitled "Windows of Heaven" how to tell time by the stars by Talmage Wilson. In his introduction he explains why he would rather look at the sky without the frustration of the telescope. He says that real telescopes are in the hands of the experts and that is where they should stay. For there is so much to see and enjoy with the unaided eye that one cannot begin to exhaust the riches that lie before you....
I cannot remember why or how we came to own this book but I think we must have attended some seminar. It is very interresting.

Hi Clare!

I'm not a constellation expert either, tho' I love to look at the stars. I was pointed to this website that has great information on a related subject--the moon. Did you know we'll be having a lunar eclipse this month? I'm thinking it's a good excuse to let the kids stay up late and sit out on the porch with blankies and hot chocolate:
