                      | Help! My garden is 1/4 infested with this yucky horrid bindweed. Any ideas other than soaking in roundup, which I really don't want to do. . . but it's just popping up like I planted it every square inch or so |

Oh my gosh Sheila! I HATE that stuff! It's the WORST! The only luck I had with it is going out every day and pulling/digging it up. The problem is that if the root breaks, it just grows another plant. I heard that it can great an underground network that spans MILES! It's horrible! I went out every day and pulled and dug up as much as I could but the next day there was always more. I have heard that you can keep doing this and slowly exhaust the plant. But you have to be super viligiant and expect it to take the whole season or more before you finally kill it all off. Good luck to you! My heart goes out to you!

Alee is right, the best thing to do is wage a dedicated war against it by handpulling, especially before it blooms,it spreads by both roots and seeds so by pulling it out before it sets seed you've prevented alot of it,the old saying goes "One years seed is seven years weeding" rings true but worse is if you till over bindweed,it will reward you by millions of descendants, chopping up and distributing those roots with a tiller is really bad Ju-Ju when it comes to bindweed~so please be patient and persistent, you may never fully get rid of it but it can be managed a bit.

Bindweed just thrives here as well. I saw it pull down an entire foxglove at the Morton Arboretum (where I volunteer garden). I was amazed how strong that nasty weed is! Keep digging it up, one day you will see the reward!

My nemesis. The more you pull the more it comes back. When you pull, make sure you get the root--it's a runner, like morning glory's. Ugh. I'm sorry--it's downright disconcerting, and about the only thing (besides snakes) in the garden that makes me swear!

                      | Yeah, this stuff is so hard to eradicate. But if you can keep pulling it before it gets to the point of twining around your plants, it won't do much harm. |
