Does anyone know how to take the suet from an animal and make it into the bird feed kind? Do you just melt it and mix with bird seed or is there something special you have to do to it? I have ten pounds of it from the butcher of our steer and I don't want it to go to waste. Thanks, Alicia

Hi Alicia, I've never made it, but I put the store bought kind of for the birds. I googled and came up with a couple links for you. Seems pretty straightforward:

Alicia....with Spring around the corner, I bet you could sell the stuff! It sounds like with 10 pounds you ought'a be able to make a bunch.
Blessings Catherine

I've made the little squares with bird seed mixed in from suet. If you want easy (and who doesn't?), you can heat the suet in your crock pot on the low setting. After it melts, strain out any big pieces that are left & pour into a shallow baking pan. Stir in bird seed, let cool & cut into squares. Rhonda

Thanks Rhonda that would be an easy way.I once bought a suet wreath and it was easy to hang up with string I wonder if I use a bunt pan if it would work. Alicia

I've dipped pinecones into suet and then rolled it in seeds once the suet hardens. It also works with spreading peanut butter on the pinecones (and is safer to do with kids). The cones can be hung in a tree with pretty yarn or ribbon.
