Cody just called me to tell me he got a card and a check from Mary in Iowa, and he'd like to thank them, but I'm not sure who that is! He has the address, but has no way to get to the PO, but would like to send a thank you e-mail if he could. I only know screen names and I don't want to post last names here, but if any of you recognize yourself by this description, please e-mail me, so I can pass your e-mail address along to Cody. I'm back - Clairey - his girlfriend - drove him to the cabin so we could see him while we were there. That was so nice of her! He is seeing a wound specialist - he has a spot on his outer leg that they are calling "dead" - I'm not sure what that means to his recovery, but he has a lot of work just to take care of the wounds. Bone seems to be healing - it's aching and wakes him up in the night, but doctor says it's healing. The trip to the cabin, while physically draining, was good for his spirit I think. He spent a lot of time sitting on the porch, looking out over the land - much better than being cooped up in his apartment. I have a picture - I'll post it. Thanks for asking! (That's Kiska - his Siberian Husky sitting on his lap)

What a GORGEOUS picture! Man, I am so sorry this came along for him and you and everyone else. What a tough, tough, thing..such a young vibrant on the go kind of guy. I can't imagine the roller-coaster of emotion he must be feeling having his life stop so abruptly. It's that whole weird, "Man was I ever lucky... to gee whiz this stinks and I'm not so lucky after all... to man was I lucky...to I am so bored and don't want all this time to think....UGH" I get it. I am keeping him and your family so close..Thank you for the updates! blessings to you!! ~julia

I am so glad to hear that he is on the mend. Does he have to do saline irigations on the "dead" area? My partner had healing problems with infection and in order for it to heal from the inside out he had to do saline irigations several times a day. It's a slow process. I'm so glad you got to visit with him as I am sure that helped to relieve your mind and raise his spirits.

Thanks Julia! You really nailed it - that's exactly how his emotions are going. "I feel useless - but everyone tells me I'm so lucky, but I'm so useless" kind of thing.
Sheri - yes he is doing the saline irrigations. He has a "hole" in his leg too - I actually got a picture of it this weekend. I watched his girlfriend pack it - she took off the vaseline skins over the wounds, then dipped sterile gauze in a saline solution and packed the "hole" with it. I can't imagine that hole ever filling in with tissue, but I guess it will!

| Sherri, When Alee mentioned that you were at your cabin I was hoping somehow that Cody could be with there with you. Kudos to Clairey for bringing him! On his wound--just before we moved here Jim was bitten by a brown recluse spider, didn't even know we had them in Mn. It was ugly--he had a gapin hole and dead black skin all around it. We didn't want to go to the dr because we knew we would be getting different health care and thought we wouldn't get it if we had a "pre-existing" condition. We had read on the internet that there wasn't really even any treatment had we seen a dr. It was getting so bad that we finally called our insurance provider and they agreed, they didn't have any ideas what to do. I put everthing on it I could think of. Now I'm no doctor but this worked for us. I think what helped was tree tea oil. If my memory serves me we diluted it a bit. Maybe it was Jim's tough immune system but the thing healed and he doesn't even have a scar! I mean this thing was horrible looking. Please listen to the drs, I'm just relaying our experience. He's young and healthy and well loved. It will heal, the human body is a marvelous thing. Let it do it's thing. JoAnn |

Oh Sherri! I can only imagine! For such a young fearless active person this must be the hardest thing. "Now what am I supposed to DO with myself? I'm just sitting here being waited on hand and foot because I can't DO anything..." Poor thing...It takes a long time for people to realize that what we DO is sometimes irrelevant. What matters is who we are while we're doing it that gives people pause. Just think of it. Think of someone doing volunteer work, providing a much needed service to others but is totally sour about their work. No one ever remembers their action, which is serving others. What people remember is what a jerk he was about it. On the other hand, you have someone sitting in a wheelchair making a jig-saw puzzle in a nursing home and they are serene and gentle. You sit down listening to stories of a bygone day placing a puzzle piece here and there. This person isn't doing anything worthy of attention or pause and yet you remember them. You leave feeling as if something has changed within. You remember, "Man, I love doing jigsaw puzzles! That was so cool!"
Your son has a great deal of time on his hands for doing nothing, something, I assume, he is rather ill-equipped to do. He isn't unique in that regard. Most people are uncomfortable 'being.' But it is my firm belief that we are much better 'do-ers' when we take the time to simply be and know ourselves. For some people climbing steep peaks isn't nearly as intimidating as just being still and allowing others to do for a change. I so get it. It's so hard.
Your son has been asked to consider great things by Life's teacher.. I hope he starts paying attention. The wonders he will learn will see him soar!

Sherri, thanks for posting the pic. He sure looks good with his dog on his lap outside your cabin. What a demanding time of his life, having to learn something so different from who is his. He will come out stronger because of that.
I second the advice on Tea Tree, make sure to dilute it( with oil) , it is both pungent and stong but it cures infections very well.
Would making something actually, like birdhouses, would help him make something with his hands and take the mental rollercoster away ? They are some good tutorials on-line and it deosn't take much to get started. I've always found that having something to work on helps getting up the next day and the day after.

I am sorry to hear that he has to do the saline packing route. It takes a lot of work and a long time healing. What the saline does is keep the outer part of the wound from healing over and preventing the infection from draining and healing from the inside out. When the outside skin heals over and underneath isn't healed yet and traps bacteria causing infection to pool under the skin. So they go in and debris the area, remove the dead tissue with a tool that looks like a water pik and then to keep the top from healing over again before the damaged area heals you pack it with saline gauze to kill the infection, act as a wick to draw the infection out. It's a nasty business. I hope he heals quickly. (but not too quickly or he risks going thru the process again.) My heart goes out to him, I do know first hand what that process is like. What ever he does - please tell him to follow doctors orders and not to mess around. This type of infection can be dangerous if it isn't kept on top of. I will keep him in my prayers.
