After seeing MaryJane's plum pit, I SO want an outdoor respite room that I can almost taste it. Do any of you camp in your yard? It sounds a little hokey, but I LOVE it - especially with a little one. Do you have outdoor "rooms?" If so, what are they like?

not yet .. but it is on our agenda for this summer to build one! i already have the 'spot' picked out for it too! this autumn, we had a 'screened-in' porch built to sleep on. and we're also having a large 'un-screened' porch built that i think i'll put a couple 'hired-man' beds or hammocks on for falling asleep in .. lazy afternoons and balmy evenings.

I love MaryJane's plum pit. I want one in a bad way, so it is in the very early planning stage!. Would love those who have a there outdoor rooms to share, so I can 'steel' your ideas.....

I had my husband build me a little outdoor patio sort of "room:" up against the back of the house last summer..I lOVE it and would like it to be a place for reading, naps, spinning and hanging out. I want to plant lots of hanging and vining things and pots of herbs around it and inside and just hang out in my nice cool shelter. I would love to sleep out there sometime this summer. I promised the kids a backyard campout for when oldest son still home turns 10 in June, so that would be a fun time to try it out for myself..the rest of the family can sleep in the tent. I didn't have time to get alot of stuff started out there last year, but had fun with what I had..this spring I intend to make it better. I posted pictures on a thread last summer..If I can't find it I will post a picture again here. It looks out to the back where the animals are and I love that!! I can't wait to see MaryJane's plum pit~~!

OOOhhhhh - I just received the catalogues I requested for wall tents and stoves - I'm not sure that I'll be able to swing that this year, but it's great fun to plan "improvements!" This year, I'm looking for an outdoor bed that I can cover with mosquito netting to sleep in when things are loverly outside.
Jenny, it sounds like your "room" is going to be great this year. I'm going to do a yard camp this summer, too. My little one likes to snuggle in bed with me at night still (and I let him on special occasions), and I think sleeping on the outside bed will be so fun. I have a location for it and everything - I'm going to have to plant quite a few cool and shady things in that area, and I'm having fun deciding what those are going to be, too.
Has anyone made one of the outback chandeliers in MJ's book, yet? I'd love to make one and put it out there, too - just to add another special touch.

That is something I want to for sure do on my little patio...a fun nighttime place with candlelight..can't beat that...I should get started on it now...before summer gets here...I know it willl be quick..once Christmas is over it is summer in no time!!

I have 40 foot covered back porch that we make use of often. Well, often when it is cool. It's not screened in and when it gets warm the mosquitoes are awful. Plus, down here we have HUGE BIG GIANT COCKROACHES. Honey, I ain't scared of too many snakes...can hoe one in a second...but roaches....EEEEEEEEKKKKKK I hate those things. I will not sleep in the open air when it warms up....they're just too active and I don't want one landing on me.
Last night, my youngest daughter and I spent the night on the trampoline. It was a cool evening of around 50 degrees, sky somewhat clear and crickets and frogs justa' singin'. All our cats and dogs got up there and joined us. One dog kept my feet warm, a cat kept my side warm and another cat kept my head warm. The others were snuggled with my daughter. Such sweet sleep.
We knew there was a forecast of rain...figured we'd just come in when we felt the drops. Well, the rain didn't come until 6:00 in the morning! We got to enjoy the whole night!
I love the pics of MJ's getaway....the iron bed, the netting, the table, etc.... Is it just dryer up there? There's no way any fabric could stand more than a day here. Even outdoor furniture gets grimey from the high humidity.
I'd like to hang a swinging platform that an air mattress could fit on. That way the wood platform is somewhat weather proof and I can air up the mattress when needed.

Libby, what catalogue for wall tents did you receive, if you don't mind my asking? I requested one from the company MaryJane talks about in her book (Colorado Yurt) almost a month ago and haven't received it yet. I guess I need to contact them again; I realize things get lost in the shuffle. Anyway, I wondered if perhaps it was that company and maybe they only send them out when they have a new catalogue or something. tia

I asked for the Colorado Yurt catalogue and received one - check back with them. If you don't get a response, let me know and I'll copy the wall tent pages and send them to you, if you'd like. I think mine took a while to get here - you may just want to ask them if it's on its way...

Well - this year is not the year for the wall tent farm outpost for me, but I'm saving my pennies for next year! I have the spot picked out already - it's just calling for a wall tent and outdoor kitchen. Did anyone make their outdoor room dreams come true this year?

I have been wanting to stick a yurt out in our back woods for awhile now....I can't count how many times I have visited Colorado Yurt just dreaming away designing and gardening around a tiny one.....

I know it's not quite the same, but a "quick fix" for an outdoor room is to get one of those picnic awning thingymabobs. They are usually cheap at the outlet stores or grocery stores.
I did this in July and have not regretted for one minute the $20 (on sale), that I invested in it. It's now mid September and the cheap tarp thing is in shreds, but the frame is still holding, so I'm contemplating getting some painters cloth from the hardware store and making a new cover for it this winter. My "tent" didn't have sides, but that was okay because I could see out into my outdoor space, see the stars and the moon and the trees, etc. I even hung my prayer flags from it. It was cozy and inviting, with a small table, a lantern and a couple chairs and a camping cot! Everyone should try this, no matter your situation, imho!

Clare, you could just go get some canvas or some other water repellent material, just be sure to make sure the chems that are used in the canvas because (from sweatlodge horror stories) the chemicals, when heated up, give off a deadly fume and you don't even know you are being killed. We built a small outpost the back yard this summer. Our whole family worked together to build a bender (bent pole hut) and covered it with duck canvas. It is not very elegant, but is cozy and the kids love to take thier naps in it. We laid down an old rubber backed rug and they have filled it up with blankets, pillows, and books. As long as they close the door flap when they leave, it is compleatly water proof. We have a firepit and picnic table near by. Now that the bugs are thinning down, we eat supper out there frequently.

Oh Libbie,
I just got a book called "Ideas for Great Backyard Cottages" and they have some really neat ideas...and I plan to get more books along the same lines and when I do have my place have several cottages and trees houses and outside beds to enjoy scattered around my place!! I can't wait and I am enjoying hearing about all the neat ideas and rooms others have here!! And the plum pit is wonderful!!

I have plans for a corner of our yard...I want a little patio of flag stones, a water feature (not a pond, although they are beautiful, I have little ones and would worry constantly about drowning) I just love the sound of water!
I will have a hammock, some chairs and a couple tables...I want it to be my "meditation corner"
I am thinking of having some sort of representation for all the forces...earth, water, wind, fire....
This has made me excited!
I am going to ask for the yurt cataloge too!

We have a canopy in our backyard that has become the favorite spot for the kitties, esp. when it's raining outside. They can sit out there and not get wet. Like everyone else's, the covering is in tatters, but DH finds new ones at BigLots or through some of his catalogs. I would imagine that you could use some old canvas... or those plastic tarps for temporary coverings.
Since we have a garage full of camping gear, most of which we have never had the chance to use yet, I am DEFINITELY camping out on our property just as soon as I can. DH bought some huge tents when the local camping club went out of business and we have almost everything (well, not everything but close to it) that you could want - stoves, grills, lanterns, mattresses, etc... everything except the shower and outhouse.
I can't wait... It's been too hot to consider camping out but it is finally starting to cool down in TX. *wistful sighs*

well, so far, we still have only camped out on the screen porch. but this weather calls to me to me to do something a little further from the cabins. we're thinking of building a platform up in the pine grove in the woods. when i get back home from ohio .. i think maybe we'll start building .. or at least pitching a tent up there and just leaving it for when we want to wander into the woods.

We are planning an "outpost" at my Mothers ranch. Wood deck, Tin roof, attaching canvas and netting on all four sides and a small wood stove. We have been looking at wall tents like Mary Jane has, but decided we can build a more permanent structure for about the same cost and it would be "custom". I really love the idea of a tin or metal roof because we get very little rain here so I really want to hear it when it comes.
I'd love to see pictues of anyone elses outposts.

Ok, I have picked 3 areas for my outpost. Hubby says I already have one but it isn't really.......
Here is the back porch / deck that hubby says I already have.....
Here are the three areas I am looking at and have to choose one. I thought I knew which area was perfect but last night a strong thunderstorm and a river of rain made me realize that it might not be so perfect..... I envision using some of the big rocks around in our woods to make seats and some wooden benches made with logs from trees that have fallen. A fire pit in the middle.....more of a nature setting than the one attached to the house. You know what I mean.
What the three pictures don't show are the areas just beyond the brush that are mostly cleared just alot of branches hanging down that would need to be trimmed. I don't want to have to remove alot of natures growth......I am looking for this to be natural, relaxing, and I don't mind the critters. The only critters and I really not fond of are the spiders and we got some whoppers around here.

I think I am leaning towards the second photo. There is about a 2 foot drop off it is actually on the side of our hill so runoff won't be as big of a problem as the other shots. And I could put in some steps with some of the rocks / boulders / stones. Now let me see, how do I move them!!! Tee Hee Hee.....off to work I go.
