I've posted a blog about the Derby, along with some true Kentucky Derbytime recipes, if you're so inclined--one for Benedictine and another for Thoroughbred Pie (a favorite at Miss Wilma's Autumn Gathering...so I understand)...I didn't get a piece 
Anyone have a horse picked out as their favorite?

We'll be attending our neighbor's annual Derby Party Good people, good food, mint juleps and later a poker game that goes all night, very fun if you're winning! At the party you pick a random horse, put $10 in a pool with a chance to win $200. Last year, unfortunatly I had the filly that died. I was so sad for her but I'm feeling lucky for Saturday.
The Thoroughbred pie sounds fun. I always tease I'm bring steak tartar, or this week mule tartar as those silly girls defected to the neighbors and I had to spend the day fixing fences!
The pictures of Violet are so beautiful. You are blessed.

I wish I had a favorite going in, but there's such limited coverage of horse racing. I always have to pick my favorite during the post parade, and with pretty much the same criteria I used as a little girl when my grandpa would take me to the track: that one's pretty! Or that one has a funny name!
I may actually miss the Derby this year. Might have a family engagement. But it's my husband's family and he's rather ambivalent about them. So if I'm lucky, he may decide to bag it on Saturday morning and I can get my annual horse racing fix. |

Jonni, I'm going to have to post two favorites for me. Friesan Fire is one of the favorites and I liked that name as soon as I saw it. And I'm also picking it because of Larry Jones and the Kentucky connections. The horses he has trained have come in second place for a couple of years including last year's Eight Belles who I loved and was so sad about. So I hope this year is Larry's year to come in first.
The second one is more of a long shot but I picked it because of the name... Papa Clem. I have a friend whose nickname is Clem and some have called him Papa Clem. So I have to pick that one too.
Oh, I wish I had a piece of that Thoroughbred Pie now! It is so good! Even though Fredrik pouted because I said we had to share that piece last fall. hehe I love Derby time because it reminds me of my grandfather. He truly loved the industry and atmosphere and supported it (literally). He attended every meet around the area that he could and won/lost a lot of money there much to my grandmother's disapproval.

| amie: that's pretty much how i pick them too! when we used to go to the track up in the meadowlands in new jersey, my brother-in-law said to also pick the horse if it was the jockey's birthday! i've been to churchill downs, it is a beautiful track.....and kentucky is a beautiful state, too. well,....good luck to everyone! |

I'm so happy that we're all "sharing" in the Derby, even though only a few of us are in the Bluegrass State. I have to be honest--growing up my whole life on the track (my daddy was a jockey, then a state racing official), I've always loved the excitement and discipline that is horseracing, but as an animal lover, I'm incredibly torn. Last year's Derby quite literally made me sick to my stomach and I swore I wouldn't watch again, go again, etc...but it's just in my blood.
That's funny, Amie (and Sue)--when I was small, I used to carry around copies of Blood Horse and the Racing Form, circled, highlighted and dogeared with my picks, like my father did. Then, I'd go to the paddock and pick the horse who's rider had the best looking silks!! I did fare pretty well, and always had this retired Jockey run my bets for me. Sometimes I'd come home with $40 with only a $8 investment (my mom always acted appalled at this, but I secretly think she was impressed :))
I am so sorry that you had Eight Belles, last year, Lainey (and Rosemary)--that was truly devastating. And I understand picking a Kentucky connected horse. I just don't want Nick Zito or D. Wayne Lukas to even be allowed to BE at the Derby anymore....and I'm so happy that you, too, have fond memories of the races with your Grandfather. It's one of those things--girls usually love horses, and men usually love the bet the "ponies" so it's a win win :) I bet he and I would have got on like wildfire!
Rosemary, the party sounds like fun--you should take some true Kentucky food! Tell those girls of yours that you'll make a MULE pie next! Though, it's really just chocolate and cream, but they don't have to know that! Stinkers!

Sue, next time you're in our fair state, we need to get you to Keeneland...you think Churchill is a wonder, Wowzers--Keeneland will knock your socks off!
