Hi Karen, how are you this am?? didn't see your post until today. I have had asthma most of my life, and have been looking for a natural treatment. I just read yesterday that smoking(yup smoking) mullein will help. haven't tried it yet, think I might just to check it out.

Hope you are feeling much better this am. hugs Phyllis

My mom had asthma really bad all her life. Sometimes drinking hot, black coffee gave her some relief during an attack.

Hi Karen, glad you were better this am. I know that smoke really makes it hard. just wanted to say I'm no advocating the smoking thing, just found it interesting. coffee sometimes will help. what kind of meds are you on? not meaning to get too personal. I have less difficulty when i use the inhaled steroids, but I really don't like to take them. make sure and stay well hydrated. take care Phyllis

i actually quit smoking 7 months ago you would have thought it would help.

right now, i cant take much of anything, i have an allergiest appointment Monday and they want my system clean. i have used albuterol, inhalers and on a nebulizer but honestly sometimes they seem to make it worse. i have been taking prednisone (which i hate, i had to take 60 milligrams for almost two years so i understand anyone's hesitance towards steroids of any type) i'm leery of advair but have one. something that says asthma related deaths isn't something im ok using really. and we are trying to find an allergy medication since singular seemed to stop working. some doctors have told me i have asthma others no. apparently im a mystery to them cause they keep giving me stuff to try. i'm really trying to get away from taking stuff. in a lot of ways i think its making worse.

I've got kind of a borderline asthma diagnosis too. I never have real serious asthma attacks, but when my allergies are acting up or I have a cold I find it hard to draw a full breath. "Reactive airways" is the term I've heard.

Someone with bad asthma recommended a tea to me. It's sold at many health food stores. The brand name is Traditional Medicine, and the "flavor" is Breathe Easy. I find that if I drink it several times a day my breath comes easier. Licorice is one of the main ingredients. I think it just soothes the airways and relieves some of the irritation. It's not a medication, so you don't have to worry about interactions or false results on a test.

I was prescribed an Advair inhaler first thing (they literally gave me one as soon as I failed the asthma test). But it creeped me out (heart racing, dizzy feeling) so I stopped using it. I do take Fexofenadine for allergies (generic of one of the big ones, maybe Claritin). Over the counter loratidine worked for me too for awhile.

Hey, sorry. I just noticed that I typed the brand name in wrong above. It's Traditional Medicinals, not Traditional Medicine.

I don't find the taste unpleasant. It's strong, but not gross. I like licorice, so that probably helps.

They recommend adding honey, and that improves the taste too.

Hey Karen, I know what you mean about the Advair, I figure any time you have to list death as a possible side effect, I want to avoid it myself. LOL. Have you tried stinging nettle? probably need to wait until the allergy tests, but might be worth a try. I'm currently trying to drink an infusion daily but I forget some days. It's supposed to be good for allergies, plus it really high in magnesium, potassium, calcium and other goodies. I don't particularly like the taste, I have heard folks say, it's tastes so green!! well, I'm not too fond of green. LOL. but I add a little mint and I can drink it.

hope you can find something to help soon. it's no fun struggling to breathe. hugs Phyllis

I have asthma, daughter & son with it, moms, uncles... you get the picture. Here is what I do

1. Sip any type of hot tea with local honey ( soothes throat and causes you to slow down breathing)
2. SIT ~ do not do more than absolutly necessary
3. Yep nettle infusions. I drink a quart a day and have seen a BIG differance
4. Lots of water and/or fresh juice - flushes out toxins
5. When it is bad I take a hot bath with dead sea salts and euclyptus ois ( use epsom salts if no dead sea salts). Salts pull toxins from the body and euclyptus will help you open up
5. Humidifier
6. Slow easy breathing

Remember you need to gently nurture yourself. There are no quick fixes. I can tell you that up until 3 years ago I would be in the hospital 4 or 5 times a year with problems. TONS of steroids and inhalers. Now I do not take any meds. Just herbs!

live well,
Tamara

My bad... I should have explained. An infusion is a little differant than tea.

With an infusion you take a larger amount of the herb and pour hot water over it and let it set (infuse) for at least 4 hours. I usually take 1/2 cup of nettle and put it in a quart jar and cover with hot water, put on a lid and let it infuse overnight. Next morning strain and transfer into container and then drink through out the day. I add a teaspoon of mint into the nettle just before covering with hot water. Sweeten with honey and enjoy..

Tamara, no meds at all now?? Hot dog, I think I just learned to appreciate the taste of nettles. LOL. that is a half cup of dried nettles? that is what I'm using. thanks for all the good info. I'm going to try to increase my nettle intake and cut out dairy(a real weakness for me) to see if it helps the asthma and arthritis.

Karen good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing. Hugs Phyllis

I don't know if this will help but...I sometimes have bronchitis and I find that using a dry salt air inhaler really helps. It has no chemicals to make you feel weird. It's based on the theory that people who work in salt mines have a very low incidence of respiratory problems. I didn't believe it till I tried it. Don't know how it would work for asthma but you might want to check it out...

thanks tamara. kinda wish i had some of that now. i know if i keep talking it helps sometimes cause im not thinking about it. thinking about it only makes it worse.

phyllis,i try to stay away from dairy too and yeah it's hard. i'm a cheesehead! but t never fails i want ice cream when i cant breath. i've actually been hearing a lot about how dairy is bad for you lately. theone thing that got my attention was that it was said tht humans are the only animal to never be weened off of milk. pretty interesting, but again i like cheese.

i use to get this chinese herbal catalog. i'll have to see if i can find it again. but they sold a tea that helped with night time respiratory problems. i have to wonder why night time though? i have seen that brought up before other places, but no one has been able to explain why it would make a difference.

cindy, thats pretty cool about the salt mines. i've never heard of a dry salt inhaler, where would ou get one from?

Karen--I got my salt air inhaler from a catalog called Gaim but I don't think they carry it anymore. if you go to www.IsabellaCatalog.com , they also carry one.

so i went in today for my allergy testing, and i left angry and hopeful.

angry because apartently i have to wait three years between testing for allergies and my three year mark isnt up until 5-23 which means i have to go back again in three weeks.

hopeful because this doctor has some other suggestions and options to work on. one problem i may have is a vocal cord spasm cutting off air.

so i have some more testing to do, but having someone believe me is always nice and even better when they think further than the imediate.
