Does anyone use Pine Straw/needles for mulching?
I have read with great interest about using clean pine straw for mulching around my plants.
I used some (last summer)around the first 3 small rows of my lavender plants, it seems to work ok, not real great on deterring weeds but it does make a great clean ground cover. I suspect it is probablly ascidic so one might have to be carefull as to what plants they put the pine straw around.

I see it used here, locally, in the mansion district around my office, Grace. I too suspect it's very acidic, and that's probably why I've chosen not to use it. I don't know for sure, though. As far as asthetics go, I didn't mind the way it looked in the beds.

thanx Jonni,
I have an endless supply of it just across the road as well at my daughters.
I surfed the net & found that there are actually "farms" for this....
Maybe I will just use it around the Azaleas, Hydrengias & my Lavender.....

I've used it around my daylilies. They seem to love it. You're right about it being too loose to completely deter weeds, though.

We farm pine trees and have 80+ acres of pine needles! I use them around newly planted trees. If you keep them fairly moist and layer in new needles as they start to decompose they will actually mulch really well. I also use them in my raised bed garden area to cover the paths between the beds. I do have a weed fabric on the paths too though so I dont have to add the needles so frequently. I prefer the needles to hay because the hay can often seed out.

oh Julie,
Thank You so very much for the info....I knew there had to be a MJF Sister with information on Pine Straw as mulch.
I think I will take your suggestion about using the weed cloth and do likewise. I bought 4 rolls (on sale) several weeks ago....now to just get some nice gardening weather....
Thanx again.

If you do the weedcloth I do recommend that you buy the little stakes to secure it to the ground otherwise it will blow all over at the first stong wind since the needles arent very heavy.
