Howdy gals,
I am looking for suggestions for working more exercise into the daily routine. After many years of experimenting with great ideas in the kitchen, I now have to work them off! I have a hard time finding ways to work more exercise into my life that is fun. I saw a piece on Roller Derby girls-- they are awesome! Looks very cool! For a bunch of city gals, they really get a great workout. Not everyone has the farm to walk (at least in the physical world LOL)

Happy Trails,

Aaah! I have a clipping from the local paper featuring our roller derby girls. I'm trying to get up enough courage to go to a practice for a good workout, but then the image of myself in a hospital bed keeps me from doing it. I would so love to, though! I had a talk with a few of the gals, and they are a hoot! I just bet they would take it extra easy on me if I expressed my mixed interest and fear. :) I'll bring a first aid kit just in case, if I get up the courage. If we were closer, it would be fun to go with someone!

Wish we were near each other! The roller derby girls seem like farmgirls on skates, do they not? Unique, cool, and doing it their own way. :)

Now, that would be awesome! Aprons and pigtails and ka-pow! Sweet and a little angry. I have got to get in shape and go do that. It would be so much fun I think I'd have a hard time skating I'd be laughing so hard.

I do derby in upstate NY! It's so much fun. I read that piece in the new issue today and almost squealed! I love the logo of that girl's team, with the sexy girl on the tractor. It's painful for sure, but so much fun. I really encourage everyone who even ponders it to just try it. You have so much padding on, so it reduces the risk on injury by a lot. Let me know if you have any questions!

Erika! I love your tagline! I think we might be soul sisters! Roller derby is so huge here. I haven't tried it but it looks like a blast.

I saw an article on some Derby Girls a few weeks ago and I was thinking I would love to do something like that! It looks like so much fun. I wish more farm girls lived around here. Maybe we could start our own skating group.

hello ladies!
Roller Derby is my new passion! I love love love it. I am new to it and was very nervous that I could actually do it. It's wonderful exercise and roller derby girls are completely farmgirls on skates! I have had such fun meeting a new group of women.
Some teams are very competitive...our lovely little town has two teams. One that competes regionally. Ours scrimmages with each other and is all about learning the sport, getting exercise, and wearing totally fun outfits! We started with just a few gals (ranging all ages, all sizes, and all skill levels) to over 20 of us already! Some of the gals from the other team often join us too.
If you don't have a team locally I would imagine it would just take a little farmgirl doing to get a team started and you'd have quite a few women turn out. I was at JoAnns buying my tulle and ribbon for my tutu (yes, I even get to wear a tutu while I skate!) and had half a dozen women in line asking all about it.
So, in other words, this long ramble is to say GO FOR IT! Make sure you tell your team that you are a beginner, get all the padding and mouth guard beforehand, and dig into your old Halloween costumes for your attire and you're set!

It is fabulous fun!

Awesome Meg! I agree it's totally addictive. I, too, have a tutu that I made. I have actually made 4 now. I did 3 matching ones for an event we did and another girl on the team paid me to make her one. Everyone has been loving the tutus so much that I think I might put a tutorial on the blog for our league.

I know there are lots of videos online of various skating demos and such to help people learn. I'm still learning, but honestly I get a little better and more comfortable each time. We just began the off season and have no set practice for a month. There's a speed skating class at a local rink and a bunch of us from the league went tonight. We had a blast. I can't wait to go again next week.

I was super super nervous too, and for sure it's painful and tiring but I've never had better stress relief or met so many cool people so fast.

Kittykill-that's awesome! I like your blog too. I really need to add mine to my signature (www.ourDIYlife.com). I love everything vintage. I'm hoping for a certain name and if I get it my "persona" will be vintage secretary.

My girls & I love going to our local roller rink. They, of course, wear roller blades. Me? Roller skates. I'm old school! A few weeks ago we spotted a girl wearing the attire from The Windy City Rollers on a local bike path - roller skating. She got away from us before we could ask her, her name. We'll be on the look out for her!

Hubby tells me I'm too old for the roller derby. (42) I can still dream while we're at the roller rink though! Love to skate!

You are so not too old! We have a few gals in their 20s, but most of us are in our 30s and 40s. As well as some fabulous 50s too!!

I can't tell you how fun it is to have your method of exercise include tutus and knee highs!! I might just have to sneak a peak at your tutu tutorial.

We have women from 22 to in their 40s. It's cool because everyone is so different in age, body type, level of fitness, etc and yet we all have an awesome time together.
