What if this flu thing becomes a big thing and you are ordered to stay in your homes...Do you have enough food to manage?
If Not will you be stocking up?

Or do you think this is just a hype thing in the news?
Thanks.

I am stocked up for a "shelter in place" type situation, but, I think this flu thing is probably a news hype.. they did the same thing with the bird flu and sars.... swine flu was a big headline several years ago but not a whole lot was said about it for very long.

We are somewhat prepared for a quarantine. I wouldn't be to quick to call it a hype.....maybe it is, but I intend to try to prepare for the worst!

I am not worried. At least not currently. If it seems to be picking up or getting more aggressive, I might re-think my stance. However, I do think it is a good idea to keep some foods on hand for the "just in case" sense of well-being. We try to keep lots of dried beans and a pantry of canned food on hand. We also like to have some MaryJanesFarm good on hand as well since they are super easy to make.

Hype! Every year it is something. The recession is oldnews, the war is old news, the new president is old news. Media take facts and present them in a way that makes them seem worse than they are. My husband worked at out NBC station and we laughed about how they try to freak everyone out.

Using scare tactics through the media is how the big (and sometimes small) companies make you buy things you don't need. You know how many people are going to run right out and make sure they get a flu shot, now? Totally unnecessary. Phooey!

We're stocked. Always are. :) I go by the "If you are prepared, you don't need to worry" mode of thought. I agree with Julie and Lisa on the hype factor. Good night above!

The news keeps saying 1000 people in Mexico City have the flu, well in a population of nearly 9 MILLION it doesn't sound so bad. The news strives on negative news, that's what sells. Step away from the TV and live your life.

Rosemary- Exactly... and only 22 people in the US have had it so far (confirmed) and only one had to be hospitalized. That isn't even that bad because some people are more prone to the effects of flu than others. For instance- my dad is super susceptible to flus. He has been hospitalized before.

The biggest thing is that we all need to remember to wash our hands frequently and most especially before any meals! Also wash your fruits and veggies. By keeping good hygiene, we lessen the risk of infection by astronomical amounts.

You will always be as prepared as much as you are this very minute.....in ANY given situation or calamity. Take extra precautions toward keeping your immunity up also. Eat lots of Garlic, take Echinachea, cut back on sugar and processed food. Get some sun on your face every day. Take a walk, Get some good sleep. These are cheap and easy preventitive measures you can do to help cope with disease outbreaks.

We stay stocked up. So we are ready for about anything "within reason". I may keep Ole Ron at home or have him wear a mask and gloves. His emmune system is shot and catches everything.

They said on Fox news this morning that you should wash your hands a lot. I do that anyway. Always after I get home from Wal-Mart and grocery. This is where farmgirl common sence comes in.

Well, today we had someone come down with it in our county. All the schools in the county have decided to send every child home who is experiencing "flu-like" symptoms at school and a note went home today. The CDC has been contacted and sent blood samples for confirmation. The ill person had recently been in both TX and Mexico. One of my students asked...so what is Swamp Fever and can it kill you?? :-)

So I did a little reading on it today. It's my understanding that it's a nasty strain of flu, like any other flu but really contagious. Antivirals seem to work against it and you stay sick about the same amount of time as any "ordinary" flu. AND, the same people who would be at risk with the "ordinary" flu are at risk with this one as well. I don't underestimate the power of something like the flu. (recall the 1928 flu pandemic....1/5 of the world's pop was infected. An estimated 675,000 Americans died of that flu which was 10x the number of people who died in WWI..it was fast and deadly)

If you are interested here are some websites that track the flu...

Well, I like to simply be prepared for just about anything. . . after all I live in the mountains and a drive to "stock up" is an Hour and a half away! So we have food to survive on, can hunt or fish if needed and the gardens are coming along as well.

As far as the media is concerned, I only half listen. Yes, it can be dangerous for some no question. We have been "informed" by the media and that is enough for me. I will continue to do what I always do, just keep washing those hands!

All the food stored that you have or can have will not stop the flu.. constant Hand washing and personal hygeine is going to help you avoid it. & stay home if you are sick and away fromthose who are sick.

My great-great-grandfather died of the flu at age 33, so yes, I am freaked out!

I have had the flu once when I was around 11 and I have NEVER been so sick in my life. It lasted a whole week and near the end of that time it snowed. Snow is so rare here, my mom said that I could go play in it if I felt like it. I got all dressed up and went out there and just stood there. I was too weak to do anything. It was sad.

But really, I was thinking about this and I do think that I will invest in a bunch of MaryJane's food. We probably have about a week's worth of food here at any given time. I know that wouldn't see us through any sort of crisis. We would probably have to resort to eating the geese and turtles out of the lake. HA!

This swine flu problem and the economy have just highlighted to me how vulnerable and ill-prepared we are to handle catastrophic events. I definitely don't want to rely on the government (remember the Astrodome). Scary!

I am going to have to learn how to can and hunt and garden. I have 14 tomato plants and 9 basil plants that I haven't killed yet, so I am feeling kind of smug. LOL!

--- my mother in law is really a hypocondriac (sp) a' for years, I always kidding said, if she could get the bird flu, she'd say she's dying of it...

That being said, I'm really on the fence about this flu -- it probably is just a bad bug, and different people have different reactions to each and every strain that comes along every year. I don't like to hop up and down about all the $&"^*@ that the media shouts about, so I'm just gonna sit in my swing on the front porch an' wait to see what comes outta all this...

In the mean time I'm gonna go check out my baby tomato plants, and try to figure out where to put pepper plants.

Where the deer Won't Eat Them...

I'm not too excited about it. When we got sick with influenza earlier this year, we had been washing our hands like mad all the time. What got us sick, accordign to the doc, was the waitress at the truck stop in Troutdale, OR who coughed over us at our table. She said she didn't feel good and we told her to get away from us!! But it was too late at that point. So no matter how much hand washing we would do, the coughing did us in. I don't even shake hands with people and still got sick. Don't touch doorknobs either.

This is a manufactured 'crisis' and I'm not buying it. Just listen to what the gov people are saying. Being a shill for more gov 'help' and dependency. Don't need it.

Yep, we are stocked up big time!! Don't forget to stock up on water too and change it out every so often.

someone told me today that Russia and some other places quarantines sickness like this.

Same for aids

Pity we don't take stuff like this as seriously. And I know sometimes folks can't take off work like they need or should to keep others from getting sick.

As of today and hearing about this a bit more...I'm just glad we won't be flying anywhere soon.

It's not scary. I'd say something like the flesh eating bacteria is scary. This is more a pain in the rear.

Hubby had the flu a few years back. He was out of comission for just a day. Stayed on the couch and seweated BUCKET loads, then was fine the next day w no lingering effects. Go figure

Anna, that's how we got sick from the waitress coughing over us. We told her to go home and she said she couldn't afford to...so we ended up very ill for a week. The doc turned our case in to the CDC or whomever is in charge of that stuff to follow up on.

The flesh eating bacteria scares me worse than the flue. When we had the flu, we sweated a bunch for a week. I drank Powerade and couldn't keep up on staying dehydrated. That's how it starts and if you can't stop it, it gets worse or turns into pneumonia, which we didn't have.

We are usually stocked up in case of an emergency. If my husband were out of work or if there was a family in need. I think it's a good idea regardless of an epidemic.

Honestly, I think right now the 24/7 news coverage is creating more panic and anxiety than necessary. A lot of it is common sense, don't travel to Mexico right now, wherever you are in the world (should not take the government saying so). If you did travel to Mexico or were around people who recently came back and are now feeling flu-like, go see your doctor. Wash your hands constantly. If you're feeling sick stay home for a few days. Take your vitamins, boost your immune system, etc. Don't watch CNN all day.

It sounds like the people who have passed on did not seek medical attention soon enough, just be pro-active not panicky.

Realistically, look at the population of Mexico City and the amount of reported deaths, the percentage of those who passed on as opposed to the total population is not a high percentage.

I agree Anne.. If we all stay home when we are sick, cover our mouths when we cough, wash our hands often, and use those sani-wipes onthe grocery baskets when we shop, we will be better off.. I carry hand sanitier in my purse to use in public bathrooms.. be aware but not scare
