What do you do with money that you find? I remember my grandpa found 10 bucks when he went to pay my parking ticket. There was NOONE around so we figured it was ours for the keeps, but we joke about parking tickets and how we get lucky lol.

If no one is around, I keep it, unless it is a large amount, say over $1000, then I would call the police and turn it in. I have found $50 outside a bar once while I was out running in the morning. The place wasn't open, so how could I return it? I have also been behind a gal who dropped a large bundle going into Walmart. I chased her down and she was deeply grateful. It all depends on the situation.

I would say it definitely depends on the situation. I found a lady's purse in a rest stop on the freeway coming back from Kansas a few weeks ago. I really hate going through other people's stuff. But, I found a cell phone and remembered reading that most people put "Mom" on their phones and sure enough, there she was. I called her mom and she was able to contact them and get them to stop somewhere because they live 100+ miles farther then we were going. We caught up to them and gave it to her. I never found out much because I didn't go through her billfold or anything but she did call me back and thanked me for about 10 minutes. She said mose people wouldn't even try to have found her let alone return her stuff, which I find improbable. I think most people are honest enough to find the owner. But when you find a small amount of money in the middle of nowhere, there is no way to return it.

I found a $20 in our alley. It was all muddy and gross so we washed it and used it for a family treat.
When I visited NYC I accidently left my billfold in the bathroom stall when I went to go wash my hands. A lady came up to me and asked if I was me and handed me my billfold. I was so grateful as it had about $300 in it- all my traveling money!

Well it does depend on the situation but I feel it is only right to do whatever you can to return whatever it is you have found. Money tends to be annoymous, and I regard a wayward 20 dollar bill as pennies from heaven...however...
My sister recently told me she had found a gift card lying around in a store. She called the number to find out the balance and the automated recording said $60. Because it was a lot of money, I told her she should call the store and see if they can trace the purchase and she said they probably wouldn't be able to so she was going to keep it. She didn't even try. She had been having hard financial times and had no money at all..well...she went to the store and carefully picked out $60 worth of goods and went to the checkout... but when the cashier scanned the card it was only for a $16 value! She had no money to make up the difference and had to put everything back!
She told me I was right and that it served her right, she should have done more to try to return it...if after checking, she still couldn't find the original owner then she wouldn't feel so guilty.
Life lesson learned.

I'm going to say it depends on the situation. I found $50 in a restroom once and I turned it in to the cashier/manager of the place. I would like to think if I had lost it someone would have done it for me.
Now if I found money while walking along the road (out in the middle of nowhere, like where I live) and it was like a loose $20.00 or so I would probably keep it. But a wallet or purse or something I would try and find the owner.

I was standing in line at the grocery store and unknowingly dropped afifty on the floor. As I walked out the door a little kid cameup and told me, Hey, you dropped this. Being very gratefula s those fifty's don't come soeasy these days, I went back in the store and bought a lotto ticket, found the kid, gave it to him and said GOOD LUCK.

I'm the kind that would do my best to look someone up to return it, even keeping it a while in case someone showed up. However, if you are working for a store and find the money, turn it in! I once found $20 on the floor when I worked at the local tack store and, honestly, had thoughts of keeping it but my freakin' conscience wouldn't let me so I turned it in. It stayed tacked to the bulletin board for a month then they gave it to me. Only later did I realize that I think the manager set it up to see if I was honest by turning it in.
I guess I'm honest but those thoughts sure did creep in about keeping it!! hehehe...

One time, amany many years ago, the neighbor's dog showed up with a one dollar bill in his mouth. I was a little kid and thought that was fabulous. Another time he came over to our house with an old spatter blue bowl...

My first real summer job was "Litter Gitter" at King's Island in Ohio.
You pretty much were assigned an area and walked around in this same area for 8 hours.
I kept all pennies found and took aobut 30.00 to the bank.
One evening it was what tey called Grad Night where all the seniors from various highschool and colleges took the place by storm.
This meant A LOT of drunk people.
At the end of the evening I was sweeping an area and saw a crumpled wad of cash. I swept it up into my pan wnet to a bathroom stall and unfolded the wad. It was a 10 and inside the 10 was a 20. I figured that was payment for putting up with rude and filthy people all day.
The best one was a few years ago when hubby and I were getting ready to head home after a busy day of shopping. For some reason he took a side street. All of a sudden he pulls over. I said "what the heck are you doing!? He then took the money and proceeded to reveal a 100.00 bill! This was a desertd side street with no one around....really!
So we went grocery shopping.
Now, though, for wallets and purses and large amounts of cash found in someplace like the mall....no doublt turn it in. i'd want someone to do the same.
I don't believe in karma, but it does all come back to you eventually! |

I read somewhere that a man always picked up pennies and one day his friend asked why pick up pennies they are not worth anything. The man turned to his friend and handed him a penny. He asked what does that penny say to you. the reply was not much. Well, the old man said that "I say a prayer everytime I pick up a penny, because it says "In God We Trust."
I have taught my grandchildren to pick up "lucky pennies" and put them in their pocket. Now for big money we try to send it to the owner. |

Last year I found a large amount of $ at my back door in my flower bed. At first I said, "Thank you God"! then I called my husband to see if by some miracle it was his. As I guessed, it wasn't. I went around to several of my neighbors asking them if it was theirs. None of them had lost any. I tried my older two sons, and again not theirs. My husband and I agreed that we couldn't keep what wasn't ours. That night I kept wondering who could be so careless about this much money. The only person I could think of was my father. I called my dad the next morning and he said it wasn't his, but my brother had just cashed his tax refund check before coming to my house to drop off something. I wasn't home, so I didn't know he had been there. I called my brother and it was his $. Since he is in construction & was laid off all winter he desperately needed that money. He said he had convinced himself that there was no way he could of lost it at my house & that is why he didn't call me about it.
Upshot of it for me, is if it isn't mine, I don't keep it. I'm glad I kept searching for the owner and was thrilled to find him, my own brother!
