 i learned u can use a little dish liquid mixed with water to wash windows gals, i tried it and it really works good, and a bit less expensive then the windex! thought i'd share that wih u all,just in case u didn't hear about it, i know i just heard about it not too long ago, maybe i don't get out much tee hee!!! good to know! ! especially for me, as i have soooo many windows. it runs into a lot of windex lol!!! jo

| I've used a recipe for window wash that had water, vinegar, and dishsoap in it. I was shocked, I thought for sure it would streak but it didn't!!! I guess the Windex (and other commercial window cleaners) leave a build up on windows so the use of the soap dissolves the build up and you have sparkling windows!!! Don't know how true it is but I know it works!! |

What are the portions used for that window washing mixture? is it one part to one part? I'm thinking you wouldn't need as much dishsoap. I'd be interested in trying this solution. Do you wipe the windows with a sponge with it or use a spray bottle?
Also there's always the delimma, do you use lint-free rags or newspaper? Which one do you find works better? Thanks for your suggestions. Have a blessed day.

I never knew you could use the dish soap either. I always use white vinegar & water. I'm going to try this. I have the same questions as Lynda. Thanks.

FYI Window washers that do the big buildings in cities just use dish soap in water. It apparently works the best. I saw it on Discovery, so it must be true!

I don't know what Jocelyn used but here is my recipe....
WINDOW CLEANER
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups water
spray bottle |

I'm so happy to hear about this! It's hard finding good cleaning products here when you can't read the labels... and the potential window cleaner D bought leaves streaks. yay!

This is great..except for one small thing..I loathe doing my windows! I need a real attitude adjustment here. I don't know what it is..but I can blow off window washing for just about anything else! hahah..still these tips are wonderful and knowing that I'm using more natural products is a huge bonus!

I love to wash windows!! Yes -- call me sick! But it's such a happy job. You get to see the dirt disappear and in it's place is this sparkling, shiny glass. Thanks for posting the recipe. Newspaper really is great for drying and makes your windows so shiny.
Mine is just a little old fashioned garden where the flowers come together to praise the Lord, and teach all who look upon them to do likewise.

I have heard newspaper is best for washing windows but I have never tried it. Do you wad up the newspaper or fold it?
Kay...I have quite a few dirty windows if you want to come over and have some fun!! We live in a split level and have guinea hens for bug control (and comic relief!) but they like to look at themselves and tend to use the ground level windows as mirrors. I get a good view of them looking at themselves but this also causes feathers and dirt to collect on the outside of the windows. I guess this is the price I pay for keeping my kids (as my husband calls them) around.
And that window washing offer is good for anyone, I really put off that job!

Although we used to use newspaper for drying the windows, most newspapers are now printed with inks that will smear and make a mess. If your hands turn black just from holding the newspaper, it's not a good choice for your windows. I use old flour sack towels that have been retired from the kitchen. If you've been using Windex or other cleaners, wash with dishsoap and water (not too much detergent) and after a couple of washings, you can probably switch to white vinegar and water (half and half) without streaking. I find that having enough towels to always dry with a dry towel makes all the difference. Ah, the signs of spring that window washing brings!

hi girls, sorry haven't been on in quite a while i joined the farmgirl friends group, and loads of e mails. yeh!!! i just put a squirt of dish liquid in a dispenser bottle of water and i use paper towels works wonders. especially where i have such a big house and soooo many windows lol! i have heard of news paper too, but haven't done that yet. i wonder if it would scratch where i have new windows i used it once though, on the old windows here, befor i had them replaced. and it worked lovely, sure has been cold here in this neck of the woods tee hee!!! sure be glad when spring arrives. later girls hope to catch up on here soon, love from jo!
