ohhh, flannel,,,I never even thought about that,,,,what a good idea. Oh, Michelle, I saw a really cute idea for an old Chenille bedspread that is headed for the scrap pile...make 'toss pillows' out of them, using the chenille for the front, maybe even dress it up w/yoyos & buttons and then a complimentary print or solid fabic on the back side....actually the ideas are probablly endless. I saw this idea in both BH&G mag and Victia mag.... I want to make one for my trailer,,,now to search out an old chenille spread. The best part is even if the scrap is about 14" give or take an inch you still have enough fabric to make a decorative toss pillow. Hmm you could even make it as a pillow cover and put it over an older pillow so you don't have to buy a new pillowform. Ahhh!! re-purposing at it's best. :>)
(P.S.....yes, you really are a lil'stinker....I'm still guessing what mischief you are up too! lol!)

Grace- Did you see the vintage chenille pillows Mary Jane has in her shop? They are the fluffiest old chenille with vintage fabric for the back and the ruffle, Gorgeous. There were a few with great reds, if you just can't wait to make your first one.
Michelle- The flannel rug sounds great- perfect for a kitchen. I tried your slip through knot suggestion and it seems to work. I am nervous about it creating a weak spot in the rug, the cut is so long to get another ball through that I can see it ripping (perhaps if you are going to try this you should use smaller balls of fabric)...we will have to see how it wears.
I love all the ideas and discussion these rugs spark, there are so many variations that you really do have a one of a kind result each time. When we taught this class in Iowa two of our students showed us the most hilarious technique for tearing strips with two people- a tug of war to start your rug!!! We will try it out at the class;) |

Rebekka Mae, I'll have to show you a picture. I'm terrible at describing it. I tried a few variations and found one that was really easy to do with just the tiniest little cuts that shouldn't leave a weak spot at all. I didn't have to pass the ball through at all. (So I can work in color rings and switch rag balls any time too) I'll try to describe what worked:
Tiny lengthwise cut at the end of the two strips, just enough (like a button hole). Pass the cut end of the new strip through the hole in the one the ball is connected to just to expose the button hole cut. Pass your free end (of the strip you are adding) through the button hole cut (on the end of its own strip), pulling gently until it folds around on itself, securing all those little frayed edges. Crocheted a few rows as a test and it worked well.
Flannel doesn't slide on the hook as well as sheets would. I'm thinking of making narrower strips, or just using patience and working with it as-is to have a nice plush cushy feel while I stand and do dishes.
We make a difference. http://huckleberrywine.blogspot.com |

Hey Rebekka, I was so in awe of all the goodies in the shop,,,,I think I was in "Over-dose" mode and forgot about the cute pillows....between Sherri's cute little Toddler Jackets, MJ's beddings & aprons, those wonderful scented candles and, well, I am still gaga over everything I saw & touched. Thank goodness MaryJane doesn't charge for touching, or I would be broke! lol! Only 12 more days, yahoo!

Karen and Karen- you are both on the list! How fun, I just finished a new rag rug in pale yellow and cream. It is SO cushy and feels great underfoot, I started it on Monday and worked on it in my spare time this week (and I am home with two under six so there is not much spare time!). It is a small rug for next to my bed- perhaps the size of a bathmat. Only one week away now and your rug will be started, Rebekka |

Hey Rebekka, I am getting over a crumby cold, so today is a perfect day to "rip' out my frustrations,,,poor sheet, won't know what ripped it....I also finished my mini quilt, well sort of, the top is done. I just need to put the backing on. I'll have it done to bring on Saturday to show you. I would have gotten more sewing done, but unlike you with a wee one, I have wee kitties who think they need to sit on everything I am trying to work on... and ya wonder why I drink martini's...lol!

Thank you all for coming to the class, I can't wait to see your finished rugs!!! Of course we had plenty to talk about but we were working hard too. I will let Grace share some fabulous pictures when she has a chance (thanks again Grace!). It was a perfect sunny day at the Lake and I have to say- I'm so lucky to be able to create with such amazing women. I will post a thread for the last class of this series with all the details but mark your calenders...Laid Back Applique is on Thursday June 4th at 7 pm. Rebekka |

Amanda- You get extra style points for making your rugs, literally, by hand!!! I love it- a woman knows what she wants.
Karen- Thanks for posting the pictures, it was so nice visiting with you- I can't wait to see the finished rug!

I stripped a set of sheets last nite to start on another rag rug....OMG! see what you have started Rebekka??!!! hugz

This brings back such good memories. MaryJane and Meg came to Atlanta (Karin's house) a couple of years ago, and we went there, met her and made rag rugs together. I now have made about four rag rugs and my daughter has made four also, and we get our sheets at Goodwill for 3.00. Rag rug making is addictive!!!
