It is already time to sign up for the next class in Coeur d'Alene. We will crochet, talk and LAUGH all morning leaving you free to explore Coeur d' Alene's shops or crochet by the lake in the afternoon. Bring mom along!

Bed bugs to Rag Rugs

Old cotton bed sheets are transformed into one-step crocheted rag rugs that work up quickly and effortlessly — bright and cheery but sturdy and durable and easy to wash.

Instructor: Rebekka Boysen

* Skill level: Beginner
* Class Fee: $20
* Supplies: Kit fee $5 (includes crochet hook and take-home crochet instructions). Bring at least three full cotton bed sheets (top or bottom) — can be new but slightly worn works best. Any other large scraps of fabrics are also welcome.

* Location: MaryJanesFarm Store, 210 E. Sherman, Coeur d’Alene, ID

Ooh! Perfect timing! I was just thinking I would try to do a braided rug for my bathroom with some old curtain material...I think this would be a perfect class to take. And I can probably crochet better than I can do the braiding. Count me in! Judy

Judy-
Great, so far we also know that Grace and Vickie (a gal we met during our class Saturday) will also be there so it will be a hoot.

If you want to get to ripping your material into strips early make them 1.5 inches wide. You will really enjoy the crocheted rug- no sewing to do which makes it even easier on the go (think...you can be working on your rug on a blanket at the beach, camping, in the backyard or at those summer music concerts and such!

Warmly, Rebekka

Great, Rebekka!!! I will start ripping away! And I'll call the Farm. Thanks, Judy

Oh, and do we need to stitch the strips together, to make a continuous ball of fabric?

Gals- You can rip the strips and then stitch them together or just tie square knots (which Mary Jane and I both do). If the making of strips seems confusing for anyone at all just wait until the class- I will demonstrate a few methods of ripping them so I will need an example. To make the most of our time together it would just be nice for you to have some of that done so we can focus on crocheting our rugs. BE SURE IF YOU RIP YOUR SHEETS AHEAD OF TIME TO MEASURE TWICE AND RIP ONCE- the strips should be 1.5 inches wide.You are also on the list Lavender...your first name is escaping me right now;)

Chelsey, the classes are a hoot and the creativity is just amazing!
They will be also having a "Laid Back Applique' class June 4th, 7-9pm....
I unfortunately will be out of town that weekend....but if I were around, I'd be there...It would be a good excuse to go into CDA a bit earilier for some antiquing, have a nice dinner over @ BRIX and then a fun evening stitching and gabbing with the farm sisters.
If any of you can attend any of these classes, do so...you'll be glad you did.

You can stitch your pieces together or tie square knots (which both Mary Jane and I do) if you are getting your fabric ready early. There is an earlier post that explains it all in a bit more detail- recommended width, etc.

See you all soon, Rebekka

Thanks, Rebekka.
I saw the part about the 1-1/2 inch width, but didn't know if it needed to be one continuous length. The square knots sound just fine to me, thanks!

Diana- I am not familiar with that knot so use your best judgment, I will also show you a trick for attaching the lengths like rubber bands. That method only works until you start your rug and then you need to use knots to add new balls of fabric.

Couldn't you do the slip through knot to add a ball? Sort of a variation like you're putting a tag onto an item? You know the tags with the strings, just loop it through and around before you wind the ball, or make the slit large enought to pass the ball through?

Grace, I had been saving up old flannel shirts to make into a quilt, but I'm turning them rag balls for one of these rugs instead. The pastels and whites of most sheets just weren't doing it for me and I want a rug for the kitchen with reds, blacks, golds, and greens. Wa-la! Let your creativity go wild at the thrift! This time of year you can find good bag sales while they are clearing out the winter stock to make room for spring too. I hit a few yard sales and found the most darling vintage chenille baby blanket...no rag balls there! Maybe you'll have good luck clearing up on linens that didn't sell this weekend? Possibilities are endless.

We make a difference. http://huckleberrywine.blogspot.com
