Ok, I am officially gardening!! I got my gardens tilled this morning and I have been out there ALL day! I am pooped. I had to take a shower because I couldn't stand me anymore. That good ole been in the garden stanky smell. Oh what fun. I have sunburn all over and a headache, too. And my neck is so sore. I can tell how outa shape I have gotten.

So my middle granddaughter, Coryn, was a BIG help with the potatoes and onions. I mean that girl planted a few rows and raked the dirt on over half of them. And she's just 7. She is a little farmgirl for sure. She just kept working. The other 2, nothin' out of them. Well, Kansas did do a few potatoes and onions. But Chloe held a bucket and dropped 2 in. She even told me that's how many. They were a big help today. And my daughter actually helped, too.

We got 4 1/2 rows of red and white taters, 1 row of Texas sweet onions, 3 rows of field peas, 2 rows Bkue Lake green beans, 3 rows okra (seed from last years crop) 5 rows Hickory King corn. And these are 200' rows. They are so long I try not to look back or I get discouraged real quick. I will plant squash and zuchinni over there later. And more beans, peas and corn, too. That's one garden. Haven't even started on the other one yet.

I will not be moving too much tomorrow. I can tell already. Over 7 hours out there today. It can rain now.

Happy plantin' ya'll! Kris

Kristin- I am not sure if that can simply be called a "garden" anymore. That sounds more like a field to me! Way to go! Our garden is only about 15x10! I am going to have to double that at least though so I can plant our cantaloupe (musk melon), watermelon and cucumbers!

Yes you are. Those 3 things alone will take up your whole garden. I saw a cute trellis in the Heirloom garden mag today. I might try that for my cucumbers this year. I hate them all over the ground. I can never find them.

This particular garden is the market garden. I will plant another one that's a bit smaller for us and that will have the heirloom tomatoes. Plus cabbage for the market, too. And some things that we just need more room for. I think I might need help this year for sure. 3 rows of okra is way too much. And I HATE picking okra, but it sure sells good at the market, though. Especially when it's the first okra there. Getting towards the end no one can sell it. So I like to be one of the first to have okra. And corn, too. Last year paople wanted Hickory King and wanted to know if I would have more this year. So I will be ready. Now watch other people will have it, too.

Kristin- Yes, but I couldn't argue with hubby too much. He hates digging and so getting him to help break ground on even that much was pretty much a miracle! I am going to plant a few things in the alley as well, but I think I bought more seeds than I can find places for this year. I bought cabbage but I know that takes up a good amount of space.

How nice to get your granddaughters out in the garden with you. Sounds like a really great garden, I won't be planting much until the end of May here, we always get a hard freeze in the beginning of JUne. I love reading about all the garden adventures...

Last night at dinner my daughter told Coryn she was quite dirty and Coryn said "I been workin'". That's too funny. And she did, too.

I planted a row of squash and about a half row of zuchinni in the big "field" and 5 rows of beets in the other garden today. It just sprinkled off and on today so I thought I better get on out there while the gettin' was good again.

Alley, cabbage doesn't take as much room as some things. I like to plant close to crowd weeds out. So you could get quite a few in your garden.

Thank you Leslie. Thay played all day out in the chicken-goat yard. Thay had so much fun finding worms and swinging on the stall door. Good ole farmgirl fun.

Karin, that's a late garden up there. I have been really anxious to get mine started. We usually start in March here but we have have so much rain lately.

Oh I so want a rototiller! But even renting one isn't in the budget this year. Hopefully next year we can afford is as there will be A LOT more organic material in the soil!

We have had our Troy now for 29 tears. I love that thing. I can go out there and crank her right up. It doesn't have reverse so I have to be careful. But that's the best tiller ever. And it was used when we got it. We had to get a smaller tiller last year to get between the closer rows. It's a front tine. I do not like it much. It wears me out. Too much work. The Troy practically could till by itself. They even make small Troy tiller, too. Can't go wrong with Troy.

It poured rain all night here! It can now that I have stuff planted. It's supposed to be nice most of the week. I will hopefully have things popping up by the weekend.

My hubby tilled our garden this Sat., came in and said that is was way to wet to try to till anymore. Sure nuff I went out and it was that sticky mud all up in the tiller and you couldn't even see the rows. Then we had more rain last night. I know I shoildn't comlain because come July and August we will be wishing we had rain. I just hope I can get my garden by May first.

I know what you mean,Tina. I was getting pretty antsy myself. My parents live in S. Ga. and they have had more rain than we have. But you will be out there soon. Don't give up! We're supposed to have a great week here with NO MORE RAIN the rest of the week!! So maybe it's heading down your way.

yep, it is nice to have a rototiller & a hubby who doesn't mind using it! lol!
Looks like my Raspberries survived as did my blueberries & gooseberry.
My Cherry trees look good too, the pears, apples & apricots are "sleeping in late" lol!
But slowly they are starting to awaken.
I am still worried about my lavender, I lost 1/3 of my plants. uugghh!

I saw a strawberry yesterday! I was out there checking on things and saw this green strawberry. How neat. I hope there are more. And my grapevines that got frozen a few weeks ago are getting more leaves. Someone needs to mow and weed eat out there.

I've got to put fence up today to keep goats and poultry out of the garden I just planted. It's ok now but when things start popping up they won't last a minute. I just need to get a move on, as my dad used to say.

Grace, I hope you don't lose anymore lavender. I love those.

My strawberries have been blooming for quite some time but no berries. I think the possums are getting them just like last year. Will have to set the live trap again.

Don't ya just hate that? We have wood chucks here. Ugly creatures. And they love melons and squash. All the canteloupe I planted a few years ago was eaten by them. I set a live trap and it was a hot day. I caught one and it died I guess of stress and the heat. I didn't mean to kill the poor thing. But stuff happens. They are still here. Under our little house. SO if I do plant any melon type stuff, I will have to put wire around them.

Alee, you don't even have strawberry blossoms there? Mine have been blooming since Feb. Ya'll need to move South!

Nope, no blossoms yet. The outside tulips have yet to bloom for most people. But my strawberries are at least growing more leaves and I saw my apple tree had flower buds on it- so It won't be long now!

Ah, Kris, I felt your excitement over your first little strawberry all the way over here in Bama! I recognized it cause I felt the same excitement yesterday when I saw my first little broccoli head! I'm just lovin' my little garden right now! Probably a ton more than I will be in mid-July!

Shoot, it's hot as fire here today and I know I will not be liking mine if it's this hot already. It was freezing yesterday. I had my heater on all day. And now I am sitting here with sweat on my forehead. I was outside 5 minutes checking on critters. Too hot. I knew I'd be complaining about it. So here goes.

I know! It is crazy. We just had a weird thunderstorm with no rain here but poured in Chattanooga. Black strange looking clouds. I just knew it was going to pour but didn't. It does that alot here. It will rain right up the road from us and not a drop here or the other way around. Does it do that there?

It sure does! The other day we were driving and had a downpour for one mile, then absolutely nothing for another, then a sprinkling for another and then sun the next! It was hilarious!

Oh lordy - here too - I drove through at least 6 different sets of weather on the way home from work, 30 miles, today. Snow, rain, wind etc.
Never boring, that's for sure
Kristin - your garden sounds amazing!!

I was just out in the garden to see if anything's popped up yet. I saw an onion. That's all. Just one little onion top poking up out of the very hard soil. It's been one week since I planted. I am a bit impatient. I guess we need rain. It is so hot! Yesterday, too. My newest baby goats were panting, poor little guys. And it's just spring. I have a feeling it's gonna be a hot summer, ya'll.

I was out in our garden today and a lot of the beans and peas have broken their pods, but haven't put up their leaves yet. I think they need a couple more days since we got a couple cold days.
