We drink a lot of smoothies in our house (ok - shakes & malts too  )
Hubby wants to buy either a Vitamix or a Blendtec. I've been trying to research them but I'm getting conflicting information. People love both! Is there a superior model? Do we even need a machine at this level? I have heard that you can grind grain with the Vitamix. That's a plus - not sure if the Blendtec does that. I need to find out.
Any experience with any of these blenders or have a different opinion?

I own a Vitamix and yes you can grind grain with them. You change bowls is all. We love our Vitamix and I'm not sure if you were on the forums when I told my Vitamix story, so I'll repeat it. We were traveling for my husband's work back and forth from San Francisco to Washington, hauling everything we couldn't live without in the back of our pickup. We were coming home for Thanksgiving, planning on going back in a week, but I couldn't live without my Vitamix for the week. We had a windmill stand a guy had made for my dh in the back of the truck and not much room, so our totes with personal items were strapped to the toolbox. We stopped for lunch and while we were eating, some joker undid the straps on our load. We got out onto the freeway, started driving 70 miles an hour and the tote containing the Vitamix flew off, the lid came off and everything bounced down the freeway. Thank God we didn't hurt anyone! Anyway, we pulled over and started picking up books, yarn, etc. (all MY essentials), and there was the Vitamix, about 100 yards back in the middle of the freeway. It completely survived - all I lost was the little rubber feet off the bottom of the power unit. The bowl didn't even break. Still works like a charm and when I e-mailed the company to ask about the little rubber feet, they sent them right out to me, no charge. That's my testimonial!!

Wow, I just looked at the prices for a Vitamix! They are way out of my price range? Can anyone recommend a blender that isn't so costly?

I got my Vitamix when Costco had them on sale at a really good price. They don't carry them all the time, but a couple of times a year a guy sets up and demos them and they are really reasonable while he's there. It's an investment for sure, but if you plan on buying a grain grinder too, it's worth it because you get two for one.

Sherri, what a great story! How loud is the blender? I don't want something that sounds like a jet landing in my kitchen.  Does it come with a - what is it called - tamping tool? Is that necessary do you find?
Dawn, I saw a review of home kitchen blenders in Cooks Illustrated. I have the copy here somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up. Let me see if I can find my copy (It's older than the one on C.I.'s site).
