When I was young I had rage reactions to foods I was allergic to. It was as if a switch was flipped and I would lose all sort of rationality and coping when something was wrong (or imagined to be wrong). It was hard for me and my family. My mom did a great job of figuring out exactly what I was allergic to and keeping me away from it.
Now it looks like Nora has developed the same type of allergies with the same type of reaction. The past 2 months have been really hard because she isn't just reacting to the foods in behavior- her skin is chapped from head to toe with horrible itchy bumps everywhere! I feel so bad for her!
Tomorrow we have an appointment with the allergist. Hopefully we can get this undercontrol quickly!

Poor little sweetie. I sure hope you get some solid answers tomorrow Alee.
I just had a thought, have you tried calamine lotion to give her a little relief? I remember as a kid, mothers using it on chicken pox to relieve the itching. It didn't look pretty, but if it works..

Poor baby. She sounds exactly like my grandson. He gets covered in eczema when he eats wheat, dairy, or soy. I hope they can find out what she's allergic to. I would try and eliminate at least the wheat and dairy from her diet to see if that helps.

Yes we have tried just about every cream or ointment. About the only thing that helped were the steroids that they gave us.
We have cut out the dairy and soy in addition to anything with any sort of food dye (she doesn't get much of that anyway), preservatives (again not much anyway), and she hasn't had eggs for a while either. We should know more tomorrow. I will let you know!

Let us know how she does after the doctor today. I know the problem with allergies. I have mentioned the problems I had with my son and his allergies and asthma. Tell Nora that I wish her well.

Alee - be careful of the steroids especially on her face. They cause thinning of the skin. My little grandson has some small places on his face where there are broken capillaries dues to the steroids. Missy found a chamomile cream at the health food store that really helped once she got the food thing figured out.

My son gets a skin problem on occasion and I haven't been able to pinpoint the cause, but his Derm dr. gave us Clobex. It's a wonderful 'catch all' skin cream, just a little dab on the spots that need it and they're gone by morning...hopefully you will find the answer for your baby.

Well he gave use some steroids and did the scratch test- Negative to eggs, milk, wheat, corn, and soy! Yay! That is huge- she will be able to have a pretty normal diet. We are pretty sure that preservatives, dyes and possibly fragrances are the culprit so we will be working on making sure that her environment is as pure as possible.
They did mix us an ointment with steroids and he said use it from head to to 3x daily unil that rash is under control. At this point we are more worried about it leaving scars than thinning skin, but after just one application on face and arms, she looks and feels 1000% better so hopefully we won't need to use it for long!

Oh poor Nora! I'm glad that the ointment is helping, she sounds so miserable, poor sweetie. Good luck with tracking her allergies Alee. They can be a bugbear to chase down and identify, I'm glad that you've got a heads up on the likely culprits. BTW Happy Easter to you, Doug and Nora!

Alee you may also want to consider the steroids! My husband had to take steroids a few months back for something (I cant even remember what) and he was a totally different person! He would get upset at the drop of a hat and have very angry outbursts which is not like hom at all. When I had to take them in the past I always had a very "mad at the world" kind of feeling. I now refuse to take any steroids. If she has been on and off of the steroids that could very likely be contributing to the mood swings you mentioned. Clearly there is something causeing the rash but I'm not convinced the steroids themselves might not be adding tot he behavior.

Hi Julie-
I appreciate your input, however when I was little I never was on Steroids and the rage reaction is 100% from the allergies. My mom even said it was like deja vu because Nora was reacting the same way I would when I was her age. When the food triggers were removed- no mood swings. And it seems that she hasn't had a bad reaction to them because when she was on the oral one a few weeks ago she was back to her happy self until her skin broke out again (when they ran out), and this morning was the first really happy morning she has had in about 2 weeks! It was wonderful! She ate a big breakfast and then started playing right away!
This morning her chapped red skin was 100% cleared up where I had put the ointment on last night. I did her whole body except where it was already cleared up and she hasn't been digging at her skin. I am so happy. I am hopeful that she will only need one or two steroid treatments and then we can stop that because I don't like using them if I don't have to!

I am so glad that poor little Nora got relief from the cream! That will go a long way to helping with her moods, I'm sure. I can't imagine being that itchy and not being mad at something! When they're little they don't have any other way to express it except by acting out. Glad to hear that she's going to at least be able to eat regular stuff. My grandson has lived his life on rice milk and anything made from rice. At first it was very hard for Missy to find anything that he could eat so she made everything from scratch. Not it's different. She told me they went to a restaurant in Portland that had rice pasta on the menu. Christien was so excited that he could eat spaghetti and meat balls in a restaurant!! Keep us posted on the progress.

Yes, Kay- the itchies were bad, but also the food allergies actually cause rage at least in our family. It's a very rare type of reaction as far the allergy professional field is concerned but I think that a lot of allergy problems go undiagnosed because the Allergists don't believe that food can cause rage reactions. But they can! I started an allergy blog to help get the word out there!

This sounds like my nine year old sister, who has tended to be this way her whole life. She can be a fairly normal child and then eat something and go into a rage or act very moody and hyper. Do you happen to have any links or more info on this type of allergy? They eat a lot of processed food and I think almost everything she is eating is causing negitive reactions in her. I've seen her being a happy, content child and then eating a piece of choclate or pizza rolls and then flying of the handle at something that wasn't a big deal.

Oh Elizabeth! That was my childhood (minus the processed food)! It is so difficult, especially from the child's perspective when people are just assuming they are "bad" (not saying that is what you have been doing, but strangers who just see the fits often make that assumption). I had some teachers that treated me like I was just bad to the core and it was really hurtful. Check out my blog. I posted a good article there today, and I am constantly doing research and I am going to talk to our local research clinic. I would like them to do some sort of study to investigate this type of reaction because I don't think it is as rare as peope think!!

Oh Alee! Good for you and Nora! I am so happy to see you started a blog and a food diary. How useful! My daughter had horrible skin rashes all winter and the Doctors kept telling me it wasn't a food allergies and that it would just go away. Finally I figured out that it was citrus juice. Which is her favorite. Anyhow I am so happy you started a blog because food allergies aren't understood and like you said it is the poor child who suffers.
