Let's share ideas

Hi Rosemary!
Yes, I went to the Pay Dirt Farmschool to learn how to build the green house that MaryJane featured last year in the Magazine. I was lucky enough to win the raffle to get the building supplies. It is a great little greenhouse but this year has been crazy since out move and I haven't set it up yet. I plan on setting it up for the winter maybe over my current garden spot to help the compost continue to process quickly through the winter. Then went spring comes I can move it onto the gravel of our driveway which we don't use.
BeckySue- The Solviva book is about a greenhouse that was very sucessful. I haven't read it yet either, but was shown it and it looks amazing. I want to read it but haven't had a chance yet.

Well, I do not have a greenhouse but I do have two hoop houses. And this year we plan to add a third. We made the hoop houses of rebar and pvc pipe, arched over and covered with plastic. They are so wonderful. And a cheaper alternative to a greenhouse. Our hoops are not heated, but we will make smaller hoops within the hoops for winter, and they will maintain temperatures above freezing. Another really cool idea for this winter which we plant to implement, is little white Christmas icicle lights hanging from the center of the hoops. This will give us light to work in the evenings, plus they are so enjoyable to look at inside there with all the plants.
We grow directly in the ground in raised beds. Right now the plastic is off for the summer. But will be added again in the fall. This is also a great retreat place, with the little lights. I plan to have chairs out there for us to enjoy. Right now, a campfire outside the hoops, sitting in the shade sipping coffee in the early mornings has been so fabulous. A wonderful get away right in our own back yard. Plus we get to enjoy the producing plants, as we sip!  How awesome is that?

Sheri, what kind of plastic did you use? I'm thinking of getting my husband to make us one. Alot of the farmer's around here use a set up like your's to start their tobacco plants. They start them in the tobacco trays and I think that would be perfect to start garden seeds in. And they have these boxes and float the trays in water. One of the guys let me look at his and he had all kinds of vegetables started in this tiny hoophouse.

My Greenhouse if more like a Garden House
because it has a floor (i can't plant directly into the earth)
It's new this year and I only have the one lime tree inside.
Next spring i plan to start all my seedlings in there
and then transplant to the garden.
I will even put my old iron bed inside,
so i can
sleep "under the stars."
below is the first greenhouse we build
from a Costco kit.
It blew-up in the first windstorm.
Here is the sturdy one built of wood and glass.

Tammy,
Here are all our measurements. We used20 ft wide, 6 mil clear plastic , one hoop is about 13 ft wide and the other is 10 ft wide. They are approximately 30 ft long. We used 1 ½ inch and 1 inch PVC schedule 40 that was 20ft long. Had to cut a foot off each one and use 1x4 boards along the bottom to make the 20 ft work. Wider would have been better. We attached the first 1x4 to the pvc with sheet rock screws. Then sandwiched the plastic between a second 1x4 and attached it with more sheetrock screws. We used ¾ pvc for the purlin the one that runs down the middle of the top.
