Okay, there's this great machine at the thrift, Singer, looks old, has a wooden lunch-box type case (but doesn't say Singer). We looked all over it and couldn't find a serial number on the machine.

It has a rough texture, and a little oval on the base where a serial number plate might have been. It has a light and motor that have been retrofitted, so I'm guessing the machine is older.

Any suggestions on dating this machine? Or do any local gals want to know where it is so they can come buy it? I have enough old sewing machines, and though it is neat to look at, I'm sure someone else would love it more than me.

HOW do you date a machine anyway?
My sweet neighbor H. gave me a Singer machine a few weeks ago. It is OLD and in a little cupboard. You know the one, where the machine "folds" down and the top can be turned into a work surface?
There is a serial nr. on the side:
25.60.H2

I have been looking on the net but couldn't find anything. It is a Singer Merritt MI.6 and at least 40 years old.
It works like a charm, purrs like a kitten and does a wonderful job.

Hugs from Marian/Dutchy, a farmgirl from the Netherlands :)

There is a Web site somewhere that will tell you when (sometimes to the month!) and where your machine was made, based on the serial number. Here's one I located just now. You might find even better ones through Google. Good luck!

www.singer.com
go to customer help section
They have info. to date a model if you have a serial #, and a 1-800 number to call if you want additional help. I just don't have a serial # to go by.

I didn't take a pic. but I found a similar looking model on e-bay. But the one there was a re-issue (?) in the 50's of an earlier model from the teens. I'm guessing teens based on that. But I hate to go by just one source of info.

Thank you for the link. I will try to find out more.
That serial nr. I gave was the wrong one, duh. I found another one that is the correct one, yay.
I think mine stems from the 60's there about. I am not sure though but will try to find out :)
