I hope that is the name of the machine. A feather light?? My mother in law has one. She did not know it was called that. Boy is that a nice little machine. I can see why people collect them. I would want one too.

Featherweight? Be nice to your mother-in-law; bring her flowers and candy and offer to scrub floors. Let her know how much you like her little machine and maybe she will leave it to you in her will.
They are great little machines and unfortunately currently much overpriced, partially because they are very portable and easily taken to quilting classes and partly due to collectors who think if they die with the most featherweights they will win... What they will win is not clear.....

Don't have to try anymore Bonne, it's yours. They really are sweet little machines.
How nice of you to share needles Judith! When I'm done sorting out attachments and such for the FW's, I will have a box full of assorted ones for different machines. Will let you know and go from there if you have use for them. |

I have my mother's old Featherweight. It is such a sweet little machine. I got Nancy Srebro-Johnson' s book about Featherweights and I love it, now I know how to fix everything on it. I haven't had that many problems, but it is good to know all the maintenance tricks. My MIL had a Featherweight and she wanted it to go to my daughter , Susannah, when she died. I told my husband that when she was ill in the hospital, well he was my ex by then, but I just wanted to make sure Zan got it. My MIL had six sisters and they all fought all the time. Sure enough as soon as George's mom died her sister Fredda called George up and siad " I have to have that little sewing machine..." This is a woman who had four sewing machines already and never sewed. George explained to her that his mom wanted her granddaughter to have it. She was so angry. Ah well, at least Zan uses her machine sometimes...the lust for Featherweights can get hot and heavy...
We are supposed to be getting snow tonight and tomorrow. Not what I wanted to hear...ah well. That is spring in Maine.

Oh, Nancy Jo, I am rofl...lol I am dying here, thank goodness I have my cofee cup nearby to salute you!! You just crack me up! I have a featherweight stuck away in the attic that I have been saving for my daughter. She was never really interested in sewing but with a little one on the way, maybe she will change her mind ( I am just dreaming). Fat chance...darn. Maybe I will save it for a possible gd. Wouldn't that be wonderful, I could teach her to sew! Wow! I am going to get another cup of coffee on that note!!!

I just checked out ebay for the featherweights! There are tons of bids for each one!! Are they all vintage? Or are there new ones as well?

You guys just crack me up! I'd love to have one of these little machines - have wanted one for years. But not because it's collectible. Because they last forever if properly maintained. You can't beat the old Singer machines.

Kay, I am with you, I would love so much to have one! I want one to use, but they are so expensive! I swear someday there are going to be a bunch of ladies who pass away and at the estate sales there will be tons of featherweights for sale! And you know they won't be ladies who used them just ladies who had the $$ to buy them up from those of us who just wanted to sew with them!!! Sorry to sound a bit cynical there, it's just that the prices are crazy and if people would stop paying so much for them the price would come down!

It was brought to my attention that I may have offended someone with what I said and I want to apologize profusely if I did! I was not referring to anyone here at all!!! I guess I kind of had this picture in my head of a rich old lady with a whole private collection of featherweights! More like something from the movies! I also cringe when I see them selling for almost $1000.00! Once again I am very sorry if I offended anyone! It was not my intention!

I spotted 3 featherweights on www.shopgoodwill.com They were around 150.00-200.00 dollars on auction. Check out the site. Just took a look and they had three. Go to search and type Singer Featherweight sewing machine.

One of them on Goodwill doesn't have a bobbin case, which will cost $40-50 to replace. They usually end up at $250-300 there. My concern is them not being checked out other than whether they run when plugged in-and you have no recourse with most of the Goodwill sellers. I'd ask questions before bidding on one from there. Two of mine I saw and was able to check out before buying. One I was assured had been serviced and was fine-and it was. The fourth has issues and I'm waiting to hear from the lady now.
Not meant to discourage anyone from shopping at Goodwill.com, I have for several years now without a problem. |

Hey Monica, you don't need to apologize for your opinion! Don't worry about offending anyone since I'm sure EVERYONE'S taken a turn at one time or another making an unintentional or misinterpreted remark....... (not to mention ticking someone off intentionally .... LOLO) Don't take anything here too seriously........although it's fun to keep in touch through MJ's, our personal lives would still go on as usual if thing were to change at this forum.
It's hard to weed out the weeds from the flowers on the web..but they eventually show themselves because weeds always seem to want to take over! LOL
