Recession-ready, budget-loving, cheap-n-chic - whatever you want to call it, the swap is open for signups.
For those of us who love swaps but sometimes the cost of materials and postage keep you from participating, I came up with one to do on the cheap. The bag requires only 3/8 yard main fabric, 3/8 yard lining fabric, and a 9" zipper. That's it! Best of all, the pattern is a free download(link below). The finished bag when folded will fit into a 9x12 manila envelope.

It took me about an hour and a half total to make. My effort is pictured below; I made it from leftover Amy Butler fabric I had used for my laundry room sink skirt. But imagine the possibilities...red bandana print with cowgirl lining...pastel eyelet with solid white lining...jeweled velvet patchwork with shimmery satin lining...the possibilities are endless, but you probably already have enough in your fabric stash to come up with something wonderful.

Retro Tie Bag pattern link (note, you will have to enter your email addy to access the download): http://www.butterick.com/freeproject/index.html

Partners are posted!
Beacause of the odd-number I decided to keep the swap even by counting myself twice since the round-robin can be confusing.
Please email your partners for mailing info.
The deadline is May 1. If you or your partner have concerns about the deadline, also please email each other to work it out.
Have fun!

Is it really Kathy? I looked at the directions, it looks simple, I have never put in a zipper before.
BTW, checked out your blog, you are my new idol!

Kathy and June, both bags are the cutest as well!! Kathy, could you post a link to yours??
I love making bags, I have just made an interior lining bag for a sweet big rattan bag my sweet neighbor gave me! It is almost finished and will post it on my blog as soon as it IS finished. lol.

I WILL make the one in the first link, just not for this swap, I HAVE to restrain myself, lol :( :)

June,
Here is the Pattern for the purse my sister and I made,(I hope) http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/quarterlychallenge/Over-the-Top-Bag-QM1.pdf

Merry,
The zipper for "hand bag on the Cheap" (http://www.butterick.com/freeproject/index.html) is simple because you are working with nice flat fabric. There is no placket like with pants.

I would love to sign up for this Handbag on the Cheap Swap. I love fabric purses but can't afford those high price ones. I printed off both patterns and will get started right away....

This is the pattern for this swap
http://www.butterick.com/freeproject/index.html

the idea of the swap is to make one of these bags for the person you get partnered with.
It is refered to as "handbag on the cheap" because you most likely have enough fabric in your stash to make this bag with out needing to purchase.
But ask Jennifer for more details. This is her swap, she is the host.

Tammy, for this swap you let me know if you are interested in participating by 4/12. After signup closes on Sunday 41/2 I will assign partners randomly, & post partners in the original message. You and your partner will then email each other personnaly for addresses (we never post home addresses on a public forum for obvious reasons, then make a Retro Tie Bag form the free link and mail it to each other by May 1.

BTW, for anybody wary of zippers, this is a good one to start out with - uncomplicated!

Linda you are already on, check your email.

Ladies, I can set this swap up round-robin style as there is an odd number participants. The other option is for me to swap with 2 of you (i.e. count myself twice), that way being evened out the swap will go back-and-forth like how swaps this board usually work. Either way is ok by me.

Give me some feedback!!
