I have a question, I planted three apple trees, a cherry and a plum. I also got four persimon trees because they said they have to be planted in twos. Do the Cherry and Plum have to be planted in twos also? Do they flower and produce with just one? I don't know that much about fruit trees. A friend of mine at work told me I needed two cherry trees.
Thanks, Laura

It depends on the type of cherry tree you ordered - some are self fertile (if you bought through a nursery catalog
it should have said what the pollination requirements are) and some are not. Sour cherrys do not pollinate sweet
cherrys and vice versa. Some trees flower earlier and some later - you need types that obviously flower pretty close
together. The same is true of plums - the oriental trees don't pollinate the American plums, and vice versa.

There are only a few apples that need cross-pollinators, mainly red and golden delicious.
As far as I know all the other apple trees are self fertile. Its always good to read the
descriptions in the catalogs - but hey, everything in life is a learning experience....no one
is born knowing it all. Keep on keeping on.
