Yesterday I went out to get my 2 eggs and saw a hen still sitting in a nester. I had kept an old egg in that nest. The 2 eggs were in the nest next to her. So I felt under her for more eggs and took that egg out. Put it in the other nest. Well, this morning she's in the nest with the old egg! So I have 4 eggs now and will get a few more and go ahead and put those under her and see what happens. She seems determined to stay put. She looks a little like a banty type hen, not too big. And they make good mothers. So we'll try it. It will be fun to have baby chicks following their momma around. I love that.

I have one that went broody a few weeks ago. I dont have a rooster though so I got a few eggs from the neighboring farm to put under her. They will be 21 days on Friday so we shall see!

You are so lucky I really wish I could convince one of my hens to get in the broody mood! We could use a few more chicks and I hate paying 3.00 for a day old chick!!

Ok, this hen is going to be a good momma! I just went out there and she's still on the old egg plus another egg. So I stuck 4 more under her and she bout attacked me! All fluffed up and pecking. There were no other eggs in the other nest, though. That's the only thing I don't like. I was only getting 2 a day and it looks like it might stop now. We'll see. hopefully the 21st we might have 5 cute little chickies!
You never know, Heather. Mine just started yesterday. She's a banty type hen and they are supposed to be good mothers. Waht kind do you have? The only thing about letting hens set on eggs is I always get more roosters. The only little chick that survived last year was a beautiful BR rooster. Just like his handsome daddy Russell Crowe. And he has a great home with 5 pretty hens. So he lucked out.

anyone who is famillar with silkies knows what great moms they make
i have 1 silke hen who has been setting for 2 weeks on nothing!
took pity on her and put an egg under her that I hope came from our 1 buff orpington
She gives an excellent example of the definition of sitting tight
It's hard trying to pry her up when i check for other eggs. Kind of funny to see her hunker down
I'll pluck the chick and hand raise it after it hatches
Sure hope it turns out to be a hen...otherwise we'l have a back-up orpington...or backup mutt whichever |

My Blanche has gone broody. It's been about a week and a half now. I have to reach under her, take the egg, then remove her from the nest box to try and shake her out of it. Poor thing! No matter how long she sits on the eggs, nothing will happen because I don't have a rooster. :( I can tell you, she is not amused iwth me at all.
Hope you girls get chicks!

I went out to feed them this morning and she was off the nest. I felt the eggs and they were still warm. She was just eating. She acted like she was starving. I had put feed on a brick so she could eat right in front of her and not have to get up. But she went right back on the nest. Good chicken! While she was eating she was all fluffed up and running the others off.
I also put the other nest box out in the middle part of the chicken barn and put fresh straw in the boxes. I thought the other hens would see that and lay in there. But this morning there was a guinea egg in one! So at least we will have those eggs. They are good layers. I had 2 hens that hatched a whole bunch of eggs last year. If they do again I will sell them. I don't want any more guineas. 9 is enough for me. But their eggs are great. Does anyone else use guinea eggs? You have to use twice as many, but they're just like chicken eggs to me.

Karen, have you tried getting someone's fertile eggs and putting under her? It seems like they will not give up once they get that way.
