I just bought a kerosene lamp today for use in emergencies (my parents power went out for a while this morning so I thought it prudent) and I was wondering: are they safe to use around pet birds? I have a parakeet and a cockatiel and I know better than to use non-stick cookware (it gives off fumes that are odorless to humans but fatal to birds) around them but I don't know about possible fumes from the kerosene. Has anyone any experience in this matter?

Hello Cindy!

Your kerosene lamp should be fine with your birds as long as you use the unscented kind of oil and you do not burn it in the same room as your birds. I have friends that breed birds and they use kerosene lamps when the lights go out. My mother also has birds and she uses the lamps as well. Do not get the oil that is scented, as the perfumes can harm your birds.

Thanks, Tina! I would never use scented oil--I'm even careful about the types of candles I burn--and I never use them in the same room as the birds. It's reassuring to know that the kerosene won't harm my birds.

I was just talking to my mom, and she said to make sure also that the lamp isn't smoking, but if you are using it inside, you wouldn't want it smoking anyway. I just thought I would pass on her advice. :)
